How Much CGI is Too Much ?

As long as the "as-originally-aired" episodes are still available, then sure, take CGI as far as CBS wants to go and pay for. I am a purist, but I understand the "need" to make TOS look "acceptable" to modern audiences who simply aren't going to want to accept it, otherwise. I just object to it replacing the original versions altogether.

Simple answer - replace all the effects shots, replace bad sets and costumes, put in more variety of ships, make it widescreen, do anything you can (to the best of your ability) to bring it up to date.

And also include cleaned up and remastered versions of the unaltered original versions.

In one of the featurettes included with TOS-R, didn't Robert Justman say something to the effect that all these new effects were exactly what they had really intended in the first place, but they weren't able to do at the time due to budget constraints, etc.?

Seriously, what do you expect him to say? Is he really going to publicly piss into CBS' cornflakes?

^ Yeah, Hollywood people seem to have selective memories, or sometimes "retconned" memories, on things like this.

But if Justman really disapproved of what they did, then he wouldn't have agreed to appear in the first place.

Some of the enhancements worked, most didn't, but I see no reason to doubt Justman's opinion of the work. Even if I personally disagree with it.

You ever met him?

No, there's no reason to think he was kissing up or making nice at that point. If that's what he said, that's what he thought.

Justman was also credited as "technical consultant" on the TOS-R project. I'm not sure how closely he was involved in the whole process, as far as creative input, approval, etc. I'll have to go back and watch those featurettes agian.

Apparently, his contribution did not prevent the use of wrongheaded FX work that pales in comparison to fan films with nowhere near the experience or budget of those who worked on TOS-R.

Do we really want to beat this dead horse again?

I could argue that Keaton's "The General" or Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" are ridiculous today. The effects are in no way believable. Let's "fix" them?

News flash: it's a 1960s TV show. I enjoy it in that context.

Which would translate to slightly cartoonish CG work, as its the 60s. Not as much polish as a 2010 project, and not like model work.

Quite frankly, I much prefer the original special effects over the newly remastered versions. That being said, I much prefer the remastered versions of the episodes (not including the effects). It was really nice to see sharp, color corrected episodes.

Agreed. The episodes look sharper but the special effects just didn't fit. I haven't watched all the new remastered effects but have gone back to watching the originals. They just seem more like trek.

I loved the remastering. The episodes look clean, bright, sharp, and colorful. The special effects are decent, though inconsistent. Some episodes, the Enterprise looks gorgeous and believable. Other episodes, it looks almost animated. Still, I appreciate all of the effort that went into it, and I'm glad they wanted to make it available to newer generations.
