How many years between TMP and TWOK?

TWOK is in 2285 afaik. As is TSFS and TVH iirc.

TWOK could be as early as 2284 also. But that's the neighborhood. There's nothing that explains any missions between the TWOK and TSFS and how long it took to drop off the people working on the Gen Planet at some station, there could have even been a small mission or two.

There was probably more time between TWOK and TSFS than TSFS and TVH. TVH said either 3 weeks or 3 months, I can't remember which.

TSFS had markings on the wrong side of the fire fight and had less crew than it had from TWOK. And Carol Marcus and a few others from the Genesis project had to be dropped off somewhere.

There were three months between TSfS and TVH, as stated in Kirk's log at the beginning.

Between TWoK and TSfS, the Enterprise needed to pick up the Reliant survivors, drop David and Saavik off on the Grissom, and transfer away all the cadets somewhere else, then head home to Earth. That could have been done in less than three months, it is all just speculation.

Actually, the TWOK damage was still there, the ILM guys just added to it because Harve Bennett had said this would be the last film with the big, bulky Magicam model (which ILM hated).

Coincidentally, the added damage matches up with the blinking red lights on the damage control station in TWOK.

Hate to diagree with you, but that lower photo doesn't really agree with the red lights indicating damage on the upper image...just two blips on the starboard side, and none that correspond to the other damage.

In the commentary Nick Meyer points out he added it so him mum would know what was going on and he could avoid the "what year is this set in?" question.

He also felt the date would be different in different parts of the universe at the same time. It might be Stardate 1701.1 on Earth and 1234.5 on Vulcan or something like that. And it does make a sort of sense - if you assume that the Stardate system works something like the radio-updated clocks which are currently around, then it would be an earlier stardate the further you were from the reference transmitter. Something like that would be rather useful if you wre using ships travelling at high sub-light speeds, where the onboard clocks would be affected by time dilation. Maybe the Roddenberry's 'variable' Stardate system is a hold over from pre-warp drives days?

On the other hand... it's of no practical use at all to use a verbal reference system that's incomprehensible without putting it through some complex algorithm that converts it into time and location as Roddenberry suggests. Oh well.

Checked my copy of the Trek Encyclopedia (thank you again, Okudas, for such a great reference guide!), and TWOK and TSFS took place in 2285.
