How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek Novel

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

My first published work appeared in a necrophilia zine. Does that count?

Heh. I have a few credits in Penthouse Variations, the result of writing exercises for a class where the emphasis was stretching beyond comfort zones. They ended up netting me some cool cash ($400 a pop...uh, no pun intended).

And no, none of the stories were true.

Maybe.

You did better than me. I got paid in copies . . . .

Paul, to satisfy your curiousity, UNDINAL SONGS was a fanzine that specialized in prose and poetry on the subject of loving the dead . . . or so I discovered after they accepted my story. (I swear, I thought it was just another small-press horror zine!)

I also used to write the cover copy for men's "adult" westerns for $80 a pop . . .

Ah, the glamorous life of a writer . . . !

Er - you can't leave that sentence there without a bit more explanation...

Yes. He can. At least, I certainly hope he can.

*shakes head*

So many possible replies, so little time.....

Then again, paranormal romance involving vampires could technically be considered necrophilia, I suppose. :vulcan:

Why on earth did they choose that title..?

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

God only knows. I never asked. The really disturbing part was the acceptance letter:

"Dear Mr. Cox. Very few writers 'get' the unique nature of our magazine on the first try, but you have! We will most certainly publish your story in an upcoming issue."

Then I noticed the letterhead: "The International Magazine of Necrophilia in the Arts."

Yikes!

Come to think of it, though, the first piece of writing I actually got paid for was a press release for some sort of new-fangled medical filing system . . . . .

That was a long way from STAR TREK novels!

And another piece of the puzzle falls into place.

My proposal for STAR TREK: NECRO PLANET will be on your desk in the morning.

Man...now there is something for your mother to hang on the refridgerator door with your report card and fingerpaintings!

Unusual erotica is where pseudonyms come in handy.

(Takes a look at latest sale.) Of course, you'd have to be clever enough not to use one everybody already links back to you in the first place.

...you guys don't think a guy coerced into having sex with a humanoid lioness while a psychic hermaphrodite merges their awareness until they feel like a single entity having sex with itself is weird, do you? :shifty:

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

That depends on whether you work for Torchwood

Must ALL my angels be dashed to smoking bloody bits by you evil bastards?

Since you ask so nicely, yes.

Absolutely.

Hear that? That's me crushing another one just now.

There. I just did it again.

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

Well, I read this thread out of curiosity. At first, there was a hint of rationality running through it but as it progressed.....

I am now going to curl into a ball in the corner and suck my thumb. It seems like the only reasonable action to take after some of the stuff I just read.
