How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek Novel

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

You left out the *CRUNCH* and "The world may never know" parts. :(

Which part of the prospective author would he be biting off to do that?

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

Obviously, folks like James Blish and Alan Dean Foster, who had solid careers before Star Trek ever hit the airwaves, would be right up there, but a lot of the current stable of writers either started there (:D), or could count their previous credits on one hand. So, who is it who has the best pre-Trek resume?
Of the writers still actively working on Trek, probably Peter David. Of the "recent" writers new to Trek ("recent" being old enough to include KRAD and Wardilmore)... probably James Swallow or David A. McIntee or S.D. Perry.

Greg Bear is another 'big' name writer that snuck in a Star Trek book way back in the day. He had a bunch of novels already under his belt when he wrote Corona (#15, for the old folks).

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

^^Well, Bear had four or five novels and 18 stories (and one collection of six of those stories) published before Corona. Which is much less than "a bunch" in comparison to his current bibliography. When Corona came out, he hadn't "made it big" yet, or was just starting to.

Well, eight would not appear to be enough......

If it's any consolation I haven't done a Trek novel anyway (as in the thread title) - just shorter fiction, but someone else included my name earlier in the thread, so...

Mind you, I don't intend to stop at shorter fiction.

Who does? Although, technically, I have written a Trek novel, so I suppose eight was enough, but I was a novelist before Trek entered my life, and that sure as hell hasn't changed. :techman:

You don't look that old - I was a toddler when Trek entered my life...

Arguing semantics with the "a bunch" bit (suppose 'several' would have been more accurate), but yeah, just tossing out another 'big' name that's played in the sandbox. Granted, he was still getting his feet under him then, and hadn't been as prolific as he is now, but the example still works.

Appeared to have several irons in the fire when he wrote Corona, as there were a few books by him that all came out around that time, or within a few months. Really hit his stride after that.

And don't forget, William Shatner had half a dozen Tek novels under his belt before he tackled Star Trek. :)

^ :: cough :: Ron Goulart :: cough ::

That aside, it's not like "William Shatner" was an unknown name/quantity..... ;)

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

As a matter of interest, how many unprofessional credits do the writers have?!

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

I get credited for acting unprofessionally at least once a day.

Re: How Many Professional Credits Before Being Hired To Write A Trek N

Lost count. I've been writing for *gak* 33 years now.

Me too! For 45 years.

Oh wait....you mean fiction writing. Doing homework or making grocery lists doesn't count. Drats! :klingon:

Then again, some of my school papers could have been classified under fiction.
