How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each other?

I mean, there is a giant gold rush, but i am skeptical about how much gold is there. I say sure bets are Star Wars and Marvel and the rest is highly speculative.

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

The X-Men universe will safely continue. Safe to say the MCU owes a lot of its success to the X-Men movies.

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

What does Marvel type mean? Does it mean anything different than a Mission Impossible or Fast and the Furious film?

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

^Marvel comics, I assume.

Lionsgate is out, Sony/Spiderman is dealing with Disney/Marvel Studios/Paramount, and Fox is sitting comfortably with X-Men. Though Sony is questionable at times (IMHO), I forsee many more Marvel movies, apart from the decade they already have planned.

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

I know there are Star Wars comics, but Star Wars isn't really a Marvel comics film. The comics draw inspiration from the movies instead.

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

I assume the OP meant cinematic universes in the sense of either two or more concurrent linked film series, à la MCU, or one movie series plus consistent spin-off outputs, à la upcoming Star Wars slate. So X-Men is currently a movie "universe", because you've got the regular X-films plus solo Gambit and Deadpool movies coming, but Fast & Furious and Mission: Impossible are not, because they're singular series.

So, to answer the question, the MCU, Star Wars, and DCCU all seem like safe bets for the near future. The X-Men main series is also likely to stick around, but we'll see if the first two non-Wolverine solo movies prove to have legs, and we'll also see if this male Ghostbusters movie comes together at all.

Additionally, Valiant Comics has secured a nine-figure (hundreds of millions) investment for producing an initial slate of presumably linked movies, much like Marvel Studios did before their Disney acquisition.

So, for those of us keeping score, this makes for the following extant and possible sci-fi/fantasy cinematic universes:

1. MCU
2. Star Wars
3. DCCU
4. X-Men
5. Ghostbusters
6. Valiant Comics

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Universal was planning on a shared universe for all of their monster/horror properties.

Didn't they already do that in the 1940s?
;)

^ Yes, to both of the above posts - I forgot that one in my list, though it remains to be seen if any movies will actually cross over with Dracula Untold (or if that movie will even get a sequel on its own). Still, it's at least as legit as the Valiant venture, so on the list it goes:

1. MCU
2. Star Wars
3. DCCU
4. X-Men
5. Ghostbusters
6. Universal Horror
7. Valiant Comics

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

OK. In that case, I don't see any evidence the general movie-going public treats megafranchises any differently from other major blockbuster films. In other words, Marvel's success is because people trust a Marvel movie, not because of the continuing story. It's no different than a Pixar film creating trust for the Pixar brand.

So the answer to the question is "as many as are good."

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

I am curious what Universal does with its Monsters. Truth is the actual characters are in the public domain. So anyone could do a shared monster universe or crossover. Its done all the time. Look at something like Monster Squad.

To make it their own their own they should really use the iconic style of their old films from the 30s and 40s. Otherwise what makes it a "Universal Dracula" or "Universal Frankenstein" more than any of the dozens that have been made over the years by other studios?

I would be surprised if some of these aren't failed attempts. MCU and X-Men aren't going anywhere. Star Wars has a chance being a part of the same family that brought you the MCU. DCCU has me concerned as WB moved REALLY quick getting this one going. I know nothing about Valiant Comics and would be surprised if either Ghostbusters or Universal Horror actually do more than two or three entries.

Re: How many Marvel type blockbuster universes can exist along each ot

Most people don't care about "cinematic universes". It's all just sequels to them. If they liked the last one, they'll go see the next one.

They should just do original stuff or pick a new franchise.

We will have 10 superhero movies in one year soon, even if all of them are good people will skip some even on cable.

Yes, anybody could, but it's not necessarily a gold mine. It's not as though Dracula Untold shattered expectations.

Actually, "more than are..."

As many as are well-liked better?

Sony proved that a complete bomb kills your megafranchise.

I know there are Star Wars comics, but Star Wars isn't really a Marvel comics film.

True, but Disney does own both properties.

But people are saying things like the DCCU, so I figured he didn't mean "Disney" by Marvel type.
