How many films will they get out of this new cast/universe?

How many films do you think we will we get?

I think we will get three films total. I just feel like JJ will eventually want to move on to other things and not keep making Trek forever.

2, maybe 3. At which point most of the cast will have moved on, not wanting to be pigeonholed.

I'd be grateful if J.J. even sticks around for the second one. He's an entrepreneurial type; they like to start things and move on. Three is my guess.

I think that depends on the sequel and the subject matter. I think they have a lot subject matter for a compelling story. The effects of Nero's action and a capable but inexperienced crew in charge of the Federation's most powerful ship, and will JJ-Kirk be willing to live up to the man Prime Spock told him about or start to crack under the pressure. The question will be whether this cast and crew can translate from this story arc into more traditional trek.

Aren't the principals signed for three movies?

It's not a lock that JJ will direct though. He was signed on as the exec producer originally.

It's been said that the actors are signed for two sequels. We'll definitely get one, but I'm not sure if we'll get both. J.J. Abrams definitely isn't going to stick with Trek. I love his work, but the guy gets bored rather easily and likes to start projects and then move on to something else. He created "Alias" and gave up most creative control after a couple of season. He co-created "Lost" and really hasn't been a creative force on that series since the early days of season 1. I suspect he'll produce STXII but will require some force (or bribery) to convince him to direct again. And I doubt he'll have any involvement in another film after that.

I say 4. That seems to be the trend nowadays. Even when the movies get bad, the studios have tended to stretch it out to a fourth for one last money-maker.

I agree. JJ isn't the type that likes to stick around. I will be amazed if he stays after the 2nd one.

The principals are signed for 2 more films so you can at least get 2 more with the same cast. If they want a film after that with the same cast they will have have to negotiate each or there contracts that could be an issue if the actor wants too much money, is committed to another project at the time or does not want to be strerotyped and walks away from Star Trek.

I think there will be three, then at least some of the cast will disappear/die(in the fictional sense)/get delusions of godhood (in the celebrity, gushy, Paris Hilton sense).

3 and out so as to avoid staleness...

I want a television series after that, dammit!

Ditto.

Not too concerned as to whether JJ directs the next two. He's a good producer, and I trust him to get someone awesome to direct the thing.

If the history of holywood repeat itself, we'll get a sequel that will be good, but not as good as the "first" one, then another that will half-suck and then the main names (director, writers, ...) will drop off before the studio sub-contract a 4th movie that is just completely stupid, makes us puke and tarnish the name it carries like the original Batman, the American Pi series, Blade, ...

But we're trying to do a Batman Begins/The Dark Knight. So the second one should be better. I think the second one WILL be better, because we've established the cast.

Movies like American Pie and Blade probably should never have had sequels anyway.

And Star Trek is far too valuable a brand to have a direct-to-DVD type 4th movie.
