How long was the 10th Doctor around for?

one of the lines i have for my (theorectical) Four Doctors 50th anniversary story is Ten claiming to be 905 and Eight saying, 'Hold on, I'm over a thousand' to which Eleven replies, 'I lied about my age a lot when I was him.'

That's be fantastic...just the whole notion of McGann, Eccleston, Tennant and Smith on some adventure together is awesome...heck, toss McCoy in there if he's still around too...

actually the four are Eight, Ten, Eleven and a younger version of One, with a ~13/14 year old Susan.

One and Susan, cuz, y'know, it's t'anniversary, Ten as the most popular and Eight cuz he's had the least exposure on telly.

That would work too, and would nicely get around Eccleston's potential lack of participation if necessary...

I'm sure others will disagree but my belief is The Tenth Doctor has been fibbing a lot about his actual age.

I think that even if we all disagreed about his actual age, a good chunk of us WOULD agree that Ten is lying about it. We perhaps just don't know how big of a lie it is :)

He might not actually be lying as such, maybe at his age he just can't really remember!

As cheesy as it is, that WOULD be pretty awesome to see some day. I know RTD was always against that kind of thing, but who knows, maybe Moffat will be more open to it...

More than McGann, I think Eccleston is the one I MOST want to see again.

That's a fair point. Hell, sometimes I can't remember my own age and I'm, um, 27!

I could see it being a combination of The Doctor not remembering and being vain. "Blimey, how old am I? Can't be 1,000 yet. Must be 902. Yup, that's it."

Making him 900 years old is silly anyway. They should've just retconned it to 150. That's plenty old enough to be unusual without over doing it.

How long was the Doctor in his tenth incarnation?

Well, we know that he spent three months undercover as John Smith in "Human Nature"/"The Family of Blood." And we know that he spent another three months in 1969 with Martha in "Blink." And we know that he spent a year as an old man in the Master's custody in "Last of the Time Lords" before it was un-done.

In the animated special "The Infinite Quest," we also learn that the Doctor spent three years separated from Martha Jones.

So, right off the bat, we've got four and a half mostly unchronicled years of the Tenth Doctor's life.

My general rule is to assume that the time between one Christmas special and another relative to the Doctor is equal to one year. It's a bit of an arbitrary rule, what with him being a time traveller and all, but I think that that tends to come across as the creative intent (hence the Doctor being disappointed he hadn't seen real snow yet in "Voyage of the Damned").

So, from "The Christmas Invasion" to "The End of Time," I'd assume that about four years have passed. Add to this four and a half, and we get the Doctor living through his tenth incarnation for a minimum of 8 1/2 relative years.

Meanwhile, of course, there are all sorts of breaks in the Tenth Doctor's life for him to run off and have years and years of adventures.

But at the very least, I'd say it's safe to conclude that the Doctor was the Tenth Doctor for 8 1/2 years.

Will he even discuss his time on Who yet?

I have a feeling that Moffat will be more open to it, but I think Moffat would be most attracted to using McGann in the near future. McGann is largely an unknown to the viewing audience, and using him would not take away from Matt Smith's entry into the franchise.

Personally though I'd love to see a multi Doctor story, I hope Smith gets a year or two to get his feet under the table before it happens. Christmas special in 2013?

Which would also happen to be the 50th anniversary. Sounds like a plan! Get on it, Moff!

^Well that's why I said 2013 ;)

At the very least a 2 Doctor's story featuring Smith and 10.5 would be cool, but it would be great to get Eccelston and McGann back too.

^ As long as a companion needs to be rescued from a horrendous fall that deposited them literally inches away at the side of the road. This is important.

:D

Gagh. I never, ever want to see 10.5 or Rose again. (And I love Rose.) Pete's World needs to be sealed off forever. I could handle Pete's World getting reconnected to ours once, but if it happens again, then "Doomsday" just loses all emotional resonance.

I think its a safe bet that one day we will see 10.5 again, whether we'll see Rose again is another matter. To be honest RTD already destroyed the emotional impact of Doomsday by bringing Rose back once so I'm no longer bothered.

With the way that the Doctor pulls out random facts out of his butt (he out-Gorens Goren), I feel like 900 is too young, even for the mental capacities of a Time Lord. 150 would be unusual and eccentric, sure, but maybe still not enough time to be a "doctor of everything."

It could also be that the Doctor calculates his age int he years of the planet he's currently on. Some years on some planets are longer than others ;)

Just imagine how much more depressing his goodbye to Rose in TEoT would have been if we hadn't seen her in Season 4.

Though I felt it was inevitable for her to come back at some point, I wish there had been a better explanation for how they achieved it.
