Let Kirk stay dead. Bring back Shatner as Admiral Gardner (Prime) in a miniseries based on Star Trek: The Beginning.
Nah. Stewart can still pull off Picard. He doesn't look significantly different than 15 years ago. Only his voice is wavering, which fits into the theme of the show (Picard 15-20 years later).
Shat looks nothing like Kirk anymore. He's become something different. To be honest, I prefer watching Shat play Shat these days. If you haven't seen Better Late Than Never, find it. It's pretty funny, and does for the Shat what the Picard show will do for Picard: show him as an aged guy doing something completely different than Starfleet.

Nobody expected Sir Patrick Stewart to play Jean-Luc Picard ever again. But now it's happening. So, how long until William Shatner returns to Star Trek? We know it's something he's wanted for decades, coming close to appearing in Star Trek: Enterprise's fourth season, having a cameo written for him in Star Trek (2009) which he claimed he was never offered, and having a substantial role in Bob Orci's unmade Star Trek 3 script.
Place your bets, people. Pigs are flying. Hell has frozen over. It's actually plausible. What could they do with him?

Here's William Shatner back in the Generations spacesuit for the 2013 Oscars. i admit being surprised at the image, he is different but this was 19 years later!
I want to see 87 year old Kirk fight an 87 year old Gorn. I can’t imagine the Gorn moving any slower, however.
Or...just to make heads explode...Kirk is suffering from the Deadly Years thing (without the loss of mental faculties) and they only find a cure near the end (so Pine can appear without busting the budget).Maybe it's been put out there before, but ...
STAR TREK 4: THE SEARCH FOR KIRK
Kirk is missing. The crew rally and follow clues. Action happens. More action happens. Drama, drama, drama.
They locate his biosignature on some rock in space. Then the big reveal ...
SHATNER!
Ok, maybe not.![]()
Right now I’m happy doing what I’m doing. I’ve been offered many series over the years. But I haven’t done them because of the commitment of time. And at this stage of my life that’s more valuable than anything else.
While a Shatner-led Kirk show may be off the table, the actor remains willing, albeit with conditions, to return to the role as a guest star. The original Captain Kirk laid out to The Star what it would take:
It will have to pass through enormous hurdles including permission from Paramount and then they’ll have to get back to me and see where things are at.
Hmmm I wonder why CBS would need permission from Paramount to use William Shatner?
Recently you gave an interview where you said you were happy for Patrick Stewart and his new Star Trek series, but doing something like that wasn’t for you. Some in the media took that to mean you were done with Star Trek entirely. Last year you told me you were open to returning to the character. You may not want to do a new TV series, but if they can find a way to make it work, you would still return to the role, right?
That is exactly right. If they can find a way of writing a 50 years older captain and it was meaningful and had something to do with the plot, I would jump at the chance.
