How long do you think the Trekbbs will last

^ Five years? In BBS years that like twenty. :rommie: Actually you and my current incarnation are about the same age so I don't think of you as a newbie at all.

I guess everyone is noticing the slowing of traffic here, at least in MISC, I don't visit the other forums enough to be able to tell the difference. I am surprised, as I thought the new movie would give a giant boost to the place - which it did, but only for a short time. And now it seems quieter than ever. If the decline continues at this rate, it is a worrying trend. I would hope some changes are made to make the place more appealing once again. I could be entirely wrong of course, and the other forums may be experiencing a lot of traffic... it would be interesting to see a traffic chart of the last ten years, if anyone has been around long enough to plot such a thing. :vulcan:

Special interest message boards are a dying breed. The most popular boards these days are more "subculture" boards that lean toward a particular kind of culture but don't focus on a specific subject. Think 4chan, SomethingAwful, etc.

There's also been a lot of migration to services like Facebook. It is more and more becoming most people's one-stop shop for virtually all online interaction.

That said, Usenet is 30 years old and still going. Message boards like this one will never die off completely unless the fundamental technology of the Internet changes--like we all end up in virtual reality or something. But as long as we're sitting with mice and keyboards, looking at screens, this sort of site will endure even if it's only for a small population.

TrekBBS itself might crap out if there's no more financial incentive to run it, though.

That's because MISC is circling the drain. It went from a fun forum filled with people socializing and having general fun and chattiness to a tribute to social awkwardness filled with people whining, complaining, and depression. A monument to Trek-Fan stereotypical social outcasts and the more well-adjusted people avoid it like the plague it's in danger of becoming.

Honestly, this is why I don't post in Misc. that much. I can only take so much of the persistent negativity, drama, and malaise. It depresses me how many people's lives are in shambles in this forum. I feel like this place is full of socially-awkward shut-ins who are one crisis away from killing themselves, and I just can't take that on a daily basis. I try to be an upbeat person and have fun with my life and it's really hard to do that if I immerse myself in Misc. too much.

I remember when Misc. was more fun and freewheeling and not so goddamn serious and grim.

^ And when you try to post a thread that could be fun or should be fun... it ends dying a quick death. I have been attempting to revive some fun threads recently but I have been... less than successful. I also tried to do a thread that splits the middle between serious and fun (Quote, Affirmation, Observation) but it died too. I guess I just need to dig my heels in and start posting about contemplating suicide or lack of a love life or how awful customer service is at the Piggly Wiggly. I can only assume my threads would flourish.

(And an example of my desperation for a little fun around here... I have posting in TNZ. I am that desperate.)

It will survive until T'Bonz the Eleventh goes insane with some crazy idea about "breeding pine trees."

I miss the time when my "Miss Chicken, Ruler of the World" threads still actually worked and I could hand out countries of the world for people to rule.

Also I miss my Christmas pantomines - we had a lot of fun doing "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "The Fellowship of the Ring" (even if we only made it as far as Moria).

I also loved the thread in which the females of Trekbbs were able to have seven husbands each and went around trying to collect husbands.

And the slave auctions were fun as well.

I miss the bar threads. *grin* They were so much fun and also pissed off so many tight-assed curmudgeons. :D

Oh my. I enjoyed all of those... especially bar threads. I love a good drink... even a virtual one. And I think I was a slave once too. I don't remember who got me though.

Gah, I only discovered this board in April and it's obvious that I've missed years of fun. :( Miss Chicken, those threads of yours sound fantastic. Do you reckon it would be worth trying to launch them again?

I agree about Misc. being an overall depressing place. I work with vulnerable families and would rather come here to escape all that, to be honest. Yes, we all have our trials, tribulations, and bad days, but sheesh... :vulcan:

I hope it lasts. There is tons and tons of information here. People from all over come here to interact about Star Trek or whatever.
