How long before network TV has Full Frontal Nudity?

Take a look at the history of U.S. television and one will see that it has slowly but steadily become increasingly permissive since its introduction. In the 1960's Barbara Eden wasn't allowed to show her belly button on I Dream of Jeanie

Wait a minute! Are you telling me that she wasn't allowed to show her belly button on tv? How on hell would that be harmful for us to seeing her belly button? That is, I don't get it. Today, we've see beautiful women wore belly button, there's no big deal!

It's not a big deal because we've been morally corrupted by it. We should go back to Victorian ideals.

No such thing as gay in Victorian times... Cover those piano legs... OMG I just saw an ankle and now I'm totally turned on...

I think the standard model of television watching will will be gone before they ever allow full on nudity in regular network broadcast shows.

We are already moving away from the standard prime time viewing schedule with so many PVR's and TVO in use and the time shifting of programs. Then when the US finally goes all digital you will (hopefully) see a large shift to everyone getting their shows through cable & satellite providers. Once that happens, you can get your shows as pay-per-view, subscribtion, and downloads. We already have it here in Canada where you can watch an episode of your favorite show at anytime just by selecting it from the "watch on demand" menu of your cable provider.

In time, I believe that regular "network" broadcasts will have the usual stuff like news and reruns, American Idol, lifestyle shows, entertainment news, and other "safe" shows fillingup most of their timeslots. All of the television series will be "view on demand" that you can chose to watch at anytime of the day or night. Once that happens, and people have to activily "download" a show to watch then the restrictions on nudity and swearing and violence will start to go away, because "Timmy" can't accidently turn on the TV and see it, you have to actually choose to see and select the show (with warnings I am sure) to watch it. That level of control will allow the networks to "get away" with more.

As, an aside, I also think you will start seeing these network shows that you have to "select" to watch being shown, highly edited, for free on the regular broadcast by the networks. These would act as "ads" for the downloadable, unedited, shows and still give added revenue from the advertising that they generate.

How would this work $$-wise? well, each show you "watch on demand" would cost you .99 cents, and I'd bet you could get series packages you pay for up front and then get all the episodes of that series for free, etc...

It will work out.

Interesting you say that. History channel had a documentary on sex in the Victorian era. Apparently one past time for middle class men was deflowering 13y.o virgins in brothels.

Yeah, there's some very dirty sexual secrets in Victorian times... just like there are for the people who want to go back to their sense of morality.

I don't think we will see full frontal anytime soon on the main networks. We do seem to be creeping in that direction though. I think female frontal nudity will be permitted long before male frontal nudity. In R-rated movies, they already allow for full nudity for woman but rarely for men. Usually only the backsides of men.

In the 1960's Barbara Eden wasn't allowed to show her belly button on I Dream of Jeanie, and censors tried to block a scene from Leave it to Beaver which took place in a bathroom. In the 60's, the Smothers Brothers got themselves cancelled for making political and sexual jokes that would have been considered mild on 70's TV, and practically G-rated now.

Rob and Laura Petrie and Desi and Lucy, slept in separate twin beds.

But lets face it - how much male full frontal nudity really gets filmed outside of the porn industry? Given the mind set that size does matter, how many actors are going to want to go full frontal if they are small to average?

Hopefully soon.

I feel like there are too many children that watch a lot of tv, they should only show nudity late night television(after 12:00am). Children should only be tought about nudity by the parents.:techman:

What's to be taught? They're just nude.

That is like saying that a 6 year old should be able to watch porn or what ever they want that is just wrong. You are not being a good parent if you let your child watch nudity before they really understand they beauty of some nudity.
