How long before everything is Widescreen?

With widescreen HDTVs replacing standard TVs, how long will it be before everything (from movies to TV shows to commercials) is filmed in widescreen format?

A lot of things are, but when I watch TV, I still see quite a few things shots in fullscreen.

What isn't shot in some form of widescreen now ? Maybe a small amount of news footage.

I imagine it's getting difficult to even buy a professional level camera that doesn't support the format.

Family Guy is still airing in 4x3 standard def. It's the only show I'm aware of at the moment still in that format. I guess they are supposed to switch to high-def starting with the next season.

I remember a few yrs back the shows sold from iTunes, were all Full screen, one of the reason I stopped buying from them, even when offered in WS, iTunes didn't carry them. So it in not all-prevasive, not yet.

Amazing Race is still in standard def. Apparently hi def cameras are too heavy to be carried by the cameramen.

Its the same as some sports still being shot in standard def (F1 im looking at you). The funny thing is, watching older shows in full screen i dont feel i am missing much by having black bars down the sides.

And even these cheaper cameras these days seem to shoot 1080p (granted i know professional tv wont use them).

A lot of shows are being filmed with HD cameras but are being broadcast in 4:3 standard. HGTV and a few others still do this, but there is no real explanation as to why they are.

No they're not, my last employer had a staff of videographers shooting HD with Canon XLH1A HD-quality cameras that weigh in at 6.5 lbs.

It makes no sense for them not to be shooting widescreen HD.

The problem is that not all DVD producers are issuing widescreens. Frankly, I thought the "Full Screen" option had been retired years ago, but I still occasionally find a movie or recent TV that is only available in Full Screen.

Good example is iCarly. They're finally supposed to start issuing episodes in widescreen later this year, yet the show's first season or two was aired in full screen and released to DVD the same way -- I don't know if it was ever shot in WS in its early days.

It's a similar argument as to why are there still TV series being filmed in standard definition. Doctor Who was VERY late to the party, only starting to film in HD last year. As far as I know its spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures, is still being made in SD.

Most shows are produced in widescreen nowdays. The BBC for example just made the switch to HD a couple of years ago, but they've been producing all their show in widescreen since the late nineties.

The only programs that are broadcast in 4:3 are the ones that were never produced in widescreen, like reruns from old shows. TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY will be fullscreen forever!

TOS remastered is in widescreen in the UK...

I thought most things were as well. Although I still see a lot of older shows in fullscreen understandably. The one channel that annoys me is TNT. They refuse to show their movies in widescreen, so on the HD channel you are seeing an HD pan and scan. It looks like crap.

Blasphemy. If you're a purist you won't watch a cropped widescreen version.

Shows may be shot 35mm film and posted in HD, or shot in HD video which is 16:9 but 'protected for 4:3 framing'. Why?

Protecting the 4x3 area on HDTV broadcasts will continue for some time. Except many programs to continue to be 4x3 safe so viewers can center cut the show to watch in full screen 4x3.
poster.

Probably another 10 years.
There will be a slow transition of more and more standard definition 4x3 TV channels using letterboxing for shows until then. NBC has used letterboxing for primetime on the standard definition 4x3 channel the most over the years.
