How is the economy treating you?

The rent's getting paid, the utilities haven't been shut off in quite a while, haven't eaten a Raman Noodle in a few months, and starting Saturday I get to take my first paid vacation in 18 years.

:techman:

That's fantastic news. Enjoy your vacation!

Kroger just called. I have an interview for a full time position on Monday. :D

Managers: "Unemployed people are unemployed because they were all laid off due to bad performance."

Bullshit.

There's so much wrong with this, if we were to flog these people for stupidity and arrogance it wouldn't even come close to the cruel punishment act jurisdiction.

True story: The last company I worked at ran into a lot of trouble because they were developing a product that was very poorly designed and had all sorts of architectural problems. The investors (this is a privately-owned company) got fed up enough that they pulled the President/Chairman/CEO/founder from his CEO position and replaced him with somebody else. This new guy was very enamored with a Dr. Tabrizi and his book on how to transform a struggling company. Part of this involved laying off about 1/3 of the organization: mostly people over 40, but also those who were expensive to the insurance company (like me, since my wife and kids have had some medical problems.) While a small number of the 120+ let go were underperformers, most of them were performing just fine.

Dr. Tabrizi ended up using the company as a case study in the list of success stories based on his book, but he painted the RIF with a very broad brush, saying the company "terminated many underperforming employees and replaced them with a smaller number of superstars." I guess that's how the company officers think of it, too, so they can sleep at night. They didn't terminate 120+ loyal, dedicated, and hard-working employees. All they did was let go the dead weight.

I can only assume this sort of self-deception is how those making the decisions can live with themselves.

Good luck!

Flukie, thats awesome! Have a good time!

Sarek: Good luck!!

Wow that's great John. Let us know how it went.:techman:

Thank you. Now I'm really nervous. :D

There's a trick to not getting seasick. I suffer from car sickness so I thought I wouldn't be able to sail but it's easy peasy if you follow the tricks of the trade. The OH doesn't have the problems of ordinary mortals. He can make a curry in a force 9 and then eat it with gusto.

And the trick is....?

I totally hate this. If it were during boom years, there could be some credence, but in this economy? How could anyone honestly make that statement? The wheat is being tossed with the chaff in many industries. Even if you consider that many applicants are not qualified but applying because they have nothing to lose, that can be sifted out in other ways. Were I a business owner, I would hate to lose a potential star employee on some half-assed statement like that.

Despite still studying for the Bar and facing a decided lack of employment opportunity even if I pass, as I've posted, Hubby and I have been careful over the last 20 years. We're actually able to enjoy life a bit more now, albeit in our financially cautious ways.

Other than a few small spending cuts in our house hold budget, just in case things got bad for us, we are doing fine. Job security for both of us is good. In fact, the company my husband works for has more work now than before. Thankfully, the economy really hasn't affected us.
