How has your spouse responded to Star Trek?

AFEK ESLCAFE W

Lieutenant Commander

I am curious how the members here have fared so far?

My Korean wife (I've been living in South Korea for almost 3 years now.) didn't like the 10 of the 11 films I showed her (All except for Nemesis; That one really leaves a bad impression of Star Trek, in particular the entire TNG franchise.), but she was very impressed with the most recent J.J. Abrams 2009 Star Trek film and watches it whenever I play it on DVD.

Unlike the other films, that one's modern production values, special effects, and the appealing young cast, drama, spectacle, and action really help sell Star Trek to a whole new worldwide audience who were formerly very leery and wary of how this franchise was marketed and presented to them in years past.

When I realized my girlfriend didn't know who Data was, I realized we were missing a key cornerstone of communication, so I made her watch TNG- I had to skip a lot of the bad episodes in the first few seasons, but she ended up loving it. We've since watched all of DS9 (she loves that even more) and just started S5 of Voyager.

She really hates TOS, find the casual sexism really hard to handle, so I can't encourage her to watch the TOS films (we've seen all the TNG ones, natch) and I don't think I can make myself sit through ENT again, but it's safe to say she loves Star Trek now, and it's definitely bought us closer together. We have since gotten married.

Personally, I never had the desire to marry a "Trekkie wife," because I particulary want to live with someone who has particular tastes and interests that are divergent from my own. We enjoy fitness and exercise, watching films, plays, and concerts, and make travel plans during vacation time. Trek is my own thing, and she respects that.

There is no growth in a relationship if you are all into the same things.

Pray.

My wife hated it with a fiery passion when we first moved in together. She out rightly banned me from watching it in the bedroom because it "gave her nightmares" and wasn't too happy about me watching it in the living room.

Then she discovered that the captain has a beagle. If she thinks the beagle might appear in an episode, she might watch it. Otherwise she will simply look down on me for watching something so lacking in merit.

And no, she doesn't know which show has the beagle.

She only watches a show if it has a Beagle i it . . . And looks down on YOU?

My wife has been great. No a big fan herself, she supports my hobby and helps feed it buy buying books etc. I have been pretty lucky, I guess.

My wife has embraced it. :D

Too much?

If I can tear my wife away from shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood and various anime, she's more than happy to watch Trek with me.

As a lifelong fan, my wife barely tolerates my far less dramatic and noObish adoration of this franchise. Last night, during the BBC America airing of TNG, she openly chastised me for not even knowing the HD dvd remasters were coming out next year. So now I have to buy them as punishment.

Oh damn... :(

GF detests Star Trek. However, she did sit through all of the recent movie without any mocking laughter or derisive comments. I have no false hopes of her ever coming around, though.

My girlfriend was into Star Trek back when we were just friends. She's not as big a fan as I am, (meaning she doesn't follow the novels and occasionally the comics the way I do, or care for the soundtracks as I do) but she has no problems with watching the shows.

On the other hand, her favorite show is Smallville, and being a Superman fan myself, I can understand that. It's not my favorite Superman series by any means, but it serves as a nice trade-off.

^ This !

I'm quite prepared to accept that people don't like it, but calling it lacking in merit is ignorant !

And how the hell does Trek give you nightmares ?

I must be lucky that I married a Doctor Who fan...

I was a Trekkie and my wife wasn't. After we were married, I tried selling her on VOY, which was new at the time. She wasn't interested in that, but she developed her own interest in DS9 without me-- and then I had to catch up once I realized how great it was. Same thing happened with SG1. I've tried paying attention to her judgement since then.

Dear Wife really can't get into the show, but she tolerates my fandom..so there's no hurt..

However, I also can't get into Brazilian Telenovelas so she and I are even...

My wife had no contact with Trek until me. Likes TNG and Voyager, not so keen on DS9, dislikes TOS because she thinks Shatner is "disgusting".

Poor you. :wah:

Eventhough my wife having lived in South Korea all of her life, she could see that it is mainly because of the talents and charisma of Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy which makes Star Trek so popular to its fandom.

As for Patrick Stewart and TNG; she considers him to be the best part of the ensemble. Mind you, that does not make her a fan by any means being into her own interests (music, concerts, romantic films, etc.), but she did acknowledge that the bald look suited him quite well which is quite a compliment considering bald men are looked down upon with stereotypical ridicule here in South Korea.

As for the toupeed men: She told me that Shatner's wigs all looked real (Even the one's from the 60's), while Walter Koenig's (young and old) looked obviously fake. As for DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and Jonathan Frakes, she doesn't know that they are even wearing them on screen.
