How has Star Trek influenced your thinking, in embarrassing ways?

I'll be honest. I liked visiting San Francisco, but never really LIKED it. And part of that was because...on my favorite tv show, EVERY character was familiar with the city for having attended the Academy there. Yeah, I felt inferior to fictional tv characters!

But, the last time I was in the city, for just 48 hours, I really grew to love it, enough that, given the means and reasons, I could see myself living there.

Then visiting NYC and DC made me realize I liked those cities, too. In fact, I think I prefer city life to suburban life, having lived only in the LA area and Fresno.

It's not that embarrassing but one essay I wrote at uni came in at just over 1700 words, so I edited it to make it 1701 words.

I'm not sure this is "embarrassing" as such, but it does show how quickly my mind turned to Trek at every opportunity.

When I first got internet access in 2008, and established my email account, I put "8472" in my address. My reasoning was that while it would look like a dull and "professional" string of numbers to grouchy potential employers with no joy in their souls, to those in the know it would signify that the cyber-collective was now facing invasion from something previously outside its reckoning, namely me.

If I meet someone, and they're wearing a red shirt, I tend to think that getting to know them is a waste of time.

Also, the other day I spent an hour looking under the hood of my car trying to locate the plasma conduits so I could recalibrate them.

While not Star Trek related, when I'm nervous about something I have a habit of saying: "We applied the cortical electrodes but we were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient."

It's probably a good thing I've only recently gotten into Dr Who. When attempting to recalibrate plasma conduits in my car, I usually just end up playing with the radiator hoses until I get bored and then I put them back where I found them. If instead I was attempting to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow, I can think of three or four things I might try. One would most certainly result in my death, and the others would most likely result in serious damage to either me or the car.

My work space is deco'd with a lot of Trekanalia. It has generated a lot of fun conversations with policyholders. And I wear my TOS blue dress every Halloween; another fun intersection of work and Trek.

oh, guess that's not embarrassing. I did embarrass the elder son wearing my TOS drss to the Trek09 movie but he elected to go with me anyway. A really great kid!

Hey, I wore a glow-in-the-dark Ghostrider shirt to the movie--and I was over 40! I had waited YEARS to wear that shirt, and the movie sucked!

I'd wear Trek shirts all the time if they came in a girl cut and were made with the same quality cotton the box like men ones are. As it is I only wear them to sleep in.

I sleep IN Janeway. Yes.

(It occurs to me that that's exactly the kind of fandom/trek joke I make in pubic which gets me flabbergasted looks and neatly answers the topic of this thread.)

I name my cars like ships.

When driving, I tend to tap fingers on the airbag holder on the steering wheel, much like the con and ops officers did on the bridge of the Enterprise.

When I get on the freeway, I often announce "warp speed."

As a Brit, I pronounce a lot of things the American way, mainly because of growing up watching Trek.
For example- Equinox- I say eeequinox rather than eh-quinox because of the Voyager 2-parter. And Omega- Oh-mega instead of Oh-meega again because of the VOY ep "The Omega Directive."
And things like Status, stat-us over stay-tus, growing up hearing lines like "what's the status of the warp core? Shield status down to 60%" etc

Ha actually that one crops up a lot whenever I'm talking about someone's Facebook status, and they usually ask why I'm pronouncing it the American way.

Whenever it's "serious time" in my daily life, ie: work is getting chaotic/stressful or I'm about to crack in terms of anger or frustration, I usually announce "Red Alert".

p.s. I also say "warp, engage" while merging onto the freeway.
