How fast is your internet?

at home. its supposed to be a 100/100 mb/s connection but the highest i've ever gotten was 64/28 mb/s.

this is actually the best i've gotten via wifi ever. machine in question is an ASUS X72JR.

I actually dialed mine back down a few Mbps today. From what I do online, the extra speed I had before was neglible, so this is good enough for me (and noticeably cheaper than I had before)

This is pretty crappy, despite paying for 'super high speed DSL'. And I'm pissed at AT&T anyway because of this new cap they are forcing on us of 150 GB per month, with NO reduction in price.

That is bullshit. I signed up for unlimited service, and I expect unlimited service. And if they are going to cap me at 150 GB, then I want a price reduction.

But since they are not gonna do that, I'm looking to leave AT&T - and not just for internet. I'm taking my home phone and cell phone out of there too. Fuck em! :p

Even if I have to accept a cap with Comcast, at least it will be one that I agree to going in and not some bullshit bait & switch nonsense. But before I get comcast, I'm gonna check with Verizon and Clear.

I've got AT&T as well, and I'm not looking forward to that data cap. I will be breaking that cap, and I will be paying them the same price each month, regardless.

John, if you break the cap, they will charge you extra. And it will be a LOT extra.

I don't break 150 GB every month, but I do about 4 months per year. But that is almost beside the point, because to me, it's the principle of the thing. Limited service without a price reduction is simply bullshit. Not when I agreed to pay that amount for UNLIMITED service when I signed up.

I don't know what other providers are here in Atlanta - if anyone knows that, I'd be very appreciative. I know we have Comcast, Verizon, and Clear. But I don't know about any other options. Ideally, I'd like a faster connection...but if I can't get that, I'd like no cap (or a higher cap) at a reasonable price. Which I sure as hell don't have now.

Whatever I have to do, I'm getting rid of AT&T. I am DONE with those SOBs.

Yeah, they'll charge me a lot extra, and I simply won't pay it. I believe in honest and ethical business management. I will not stray from that principle, and if they try to charge me more, I will simply ignore it, as I did not agree to that cap when I joined, and I consider it the height of unethical behavior to change a "contract" against one party midstream.

Oh yes...I'm completely with you, John. It's like one of us saying "You know...I don't want to pay $XX.XX per month this month...so I will just change what I pay to suit me. Who cares what I agreed to when I signed a contract? I'm just gonna change it...and AT&T is gonna have to like it."

We can't do that to them...but they can just change the terms to suit THEM, and provide substantially lesser service without a price reduction?

It's outrageous.

But since I don't want bad credit, I have no other choice than to just leave them, and never return. Although if I signed a 2 year contract for my cell service, I will be breaking that contract since I've only had my cell with them a year.

But I won't pay any fees for breaking that contract...and if they put anything on my credit report for that, I'll fight it.

After all, I wouldn't be switching if they had just kept their word and continued to provide what they said they would provide.

Well, then I'll just have to stick it to them. See, my credit is piss poor already due to circumstances well beyond my control, and so their threats are idle for me. :D

My high speed internet access is free, so I've never checked its speed. It seems very fast, pix/videos d/l fast, so... that's it.

I can get up to 50 Mb/s through Comcast but it would be pointless- they still cap you at 250 gigs/month. Why race to the cap faster?

(Not that I download 250 gigs/month every month, but sometimes I do)

ya know they always claimed this but I never heard a peep. One day I looked at my consumption on the website, when I had comcast, and the months of October-November-December-January-Feburary-March, went something like 200, 290, 150, 570, 360, 420 and they never did anything.

I'm still not paying for this! I cancelled comcast a few months ago and I'm gettin fiber for free bc the local ISP isn't throttling like they're (presumably) intending to. It does vary some - it's been as high as 65/65 but only as low as 12/30. Up is always higher for some reason. I haven't figured out how they would throttle me, because the way this is supposed to work is, they installed fiber to the entire apartment complex - you can have 1.5/1.5 for free, or you can go down to the apartment complex and pay for an upgrade to something along these lines... their package prices ARE good, they're comparable to Comcast only you actually GET the prices forever because they're not introductory.

The irony is I was excited as hell to get signed up and start paying this company for a 30/16 plan, but I was so eager to get rid of Comcast I cancelled it before I could get the new company to come out and hook me up, so I figuerd I'd use their free 1.5/1.5 until they got their shit squared away (they had installation issues complex wide). So they get the jack installed, I hook up, and I do a bandwidth test and here I am getting 50/50! I was shocked (it's a few pages up), my shit-freaking.

I think the idea is that I'm supposed to have gone to the office and signed up for an upgrade but I never said I wanted to, I never got around to it bc their installation guys took forever to fix their problems. I just hooked into the wall and I'm getting incredible speeds. I can't figure out how they would track names to devices the way Comcast/etc does with modems and MAC addresses, because they don't provide me with any hardware. I can go buy a router if I want, but I haven't had the money and I just run Peer Guardian 24/7 anyway to protect my PC while I'm downloading anyway. It's kept me outta jail, I'm betting it'll keep me safe on the WAN.

I kept thinking they'd figure it out and fix it but now I'm a little stumped as to how they technically intend to pull off throttling jack. The way they ran the cable, I seriously doubt they have a head end patch panel somewhere with every building and room number indicated. The way they ran the cable there'd be no way to tell where it's comin from at the panel.

It's actually quite a lot faster than the old DSL we used to have. Verizon updated us to FiOS a few years ago and it increased our speed a lot.

But i'm jealous of the super high-speed internet people have. You're giving me internet envy. :(

I never thought i'd be jealous of Squiggy. :(

Bandwidth caps and usage based billing are very hot topics here in Canada right now. They've even found their way into the election campaign and an organization has sprung up to fight against this corporate greed: OpenMedia
