But seriously, my internet is 1Mb/s (in practice I get a solid 120KB/s, so at least I manage to get that speed), upload of 256Kb/s, with a ping of about 230ms. I don't have a wired line accessible here, so I have wireless internet over an old network. Not great when your work requires you to upload uncompressed video! You Americans don't know how good you have it.

I'm not at home to do speedtest, but I get about 16Mb/s down and 1Mb/s up in practice, whilst the service is advertised as up to 24mb/s down & 1mb/s up.

I am quite happy with this, but would not say no to a 100Mb/s connection obviously.

At my university... depends where I'm at too, the fastest I've gotten is around 10-12Mbps, but have gotten as slow as 1Mbps. My home connection is around 20Mbps wireless, 50Mbps wired.

Nothing wrong with that speed. You can watch high quality streaming videos, download MP3s in a couple of seconds, play online games, and do regular net surfing without a problem. I have a 6Mbps connection, down from a 20Mbps connection, and the difference has not affected anything, even though I use the internet heavily. I can watch my Netflix streaming movies in HD and still play a game online at the same time, while downloading an MP3. The best thing about the high figures you see for most other folks is future proofing (well, and multiple HD movie downloads). That kind of speed will take a long time to surpass. Otherwise, unless you're running a server out of your home, your speed is quite solid.

I'm on Comcast 20/4 right now but I'm upgrading soon to a local fiber carrier for 30/30. I'm not sure what I'll do with 30 megabits upstream bandwidth, I've never had anything near that. I guess I won't have an excuse to be such a thankless leech anymore
