How does SG-1 rank amongst all-time sci-fi TV shows?

I think it is one of the all-time great sci-fi TV shows, it had excellent plots, as well as well-written enemies and characters.

I consider it the best follow-up there is to 'Star Trek: The Next Generation." All the other 'Star Treks' kind of went off on their own way, but SG1 seemed to copy the TNG feel the best.

So on the one hand, that's cool. On the other hand, a derivative copy of something probably isn't going to end up on too many "best-of" lists. That's just the way it goes.

I like SG-1. It's consistently good and very enjoyable. But it's not really the best at any one thing. But, you know, that's not really the worst spot to be in. I always suggest it to people who haven't seen it. Really, what more can you ask for?

SG-1 is mediocre at best (all of Stargate is mediocre.) I'd put most if not all of the Treks, B5, Farscape, Futurama, Firefly and Star Wars: The Clone Wars ahead of it.

In my top ten. Prefer the earlier season to the later when they scaled back Colonel O'Neill's involvement. they made a gutsy move to go a different direction than the movie they based it on, and it payed-off for them.

If it had ended on S6 I would definitely put it way up there, but the last four years were just so... bleh. It's like the later years of the X-Files. It tarnishes my memory of the entire series in retrospect.

At the time, back in S4-6, I really loved the show.

The first 6 (mayyyyybe 7) years, I'd rate it amongst my favourite shows ever. It, BSG, Firefly and Farscape are my favourite sci-fi shows. After that, well, we know what happened after that.

I'd rank it at number 1. It was contemporary science fiction. It made it feel like we were the ones going on these adventures, not some people in the 24th century.

My ranking would go like this:
1. SG-1
2. TNG
3. nuBSG
4. nuDoctor Who
5. TOS
6. SGU
7. Cowboy Bebop
8. SGA
9. Enterprise
10. The X-Files

Could never get into that show. The basic concept was a good one, but the stories and writing always just felt SO incredibly generic and derivative to me.

I was never really a fan. Watched the odd episode, but to me it felt a lot like watching Voyager: interesting at points, but often very safe, middle-of-the-road writing, and rarely very compelling.

The real test for stargate has yet to come the test of time. Only a handful of shows manage to stand the test of time. Some are still with us in some shape or form, from the world of Sci-Fi two of course stand head and shoulders above the rest. Doctor Who (still iin production and rapidly approaching it's 50th anniversary) and the other grand daddy is of course Star Trek, which has just been rebooted with the 2009 film which means it is close to celebrating it's 45 birthday. Shows like BSG and V were remade due to them being fondly remembered, Thunderbirds looks set to be remade almost 50 years after it first aired. These shows struck a chord with the audiance in some form. As for Stargate whilst it was an enjoyable show the jury is still out on how out on how it will fair.

SG-1 has its moments, but for me it never had a chance of overcoming the handicap of being based on such a piss poor movie as it was. I regard it as fluffy filler. But like I said, it does have its moments, and it has some strong episodes.

I think one of the problems that the show had on a regular basis was that none of what happens appears to have any relevance outside its own little fantasy universe. While there doesn't always have to be a universal literary theme in science fiction, it helps if there is one more often than very rarely.

Once the Ori came on the scene it was a dead show airing.

As for how I rank it, overall it's better than DS9, VOY, ENT, SGA, SGU, First Wave, and Falling Skies, just to name a few, but not as good as TOS, TNG, nuBSG, X-Files, Walking Dead, The Clone Wars, or Twilight Zone (TOS).

While I didn't like it at first, I grew to love it while I was watching the second season. Seasons 2-5 and 7 are seasons I find highly rewatchable and just about every main or recurring character from the show up until the 9th season is interesting.

I'd rate the following space exploration shows like this:

1. Babylon 5
2. Farscape
3. Star Trek: DS9
4. Star Trek: TNG
5. Stargate SG-1

It's at No.3 for me, it was funny the big stories were epic, the stories were consistly good and they had a great continuity. They spawned two spinoffs and an animated series. I loved it SG1 was a great series.

If you had asked me this during SGU's run I would have rated it low, but after the end of SGU I went back and watched all of SG1 from the start and wow. It's amazing how you don't appreciate something till its gone. Sure, it was never the flashiest Sci fi show around nor was it the most expensive or the most dramatic, but it was almost always entertaining, even in the later seasons. It was a perfect balance of humor drama and action, and could do all 3 brilliantly (See Window of Opportunity, Heroes and Lost City respectively). SG-1 always played second to Star Trek when it was on, but looking back it certainly wasn't second best. I love Stargate SG-1, and its a damned shame its gone seemingly for good. All I wanted was this last big movie to round out Jack's character arc and unveil the Stargate program. Oh well. :(

I'd say it's no higher than the middle of the pack. It was never ambitious enough to reach any higher than that; it was only ever consistently 'okay.' It had a couple of great episodes in its time, but its most notable element was its (usually successful) use of humor.

I thought it was crap but not the bottom of the barrel. But it certainly was not up in the upper tier of sff shows like LOST, TNG, DS9, TOS, B5.
