How does one get rid of fruit flies?

I accidentally found out that a halfdrunk bottle of beer did the trick.

Somehow they were attracted to it and after a few days they all were in there drowned.. don't know why and it's their personal business how much they like to drink,

But i got rid of them. Try it.

Accidentally? How exactly did you get rid of them?

Accidentally by not drinking the whole bottle and then forgetting about it.. when i emptied the rest of the beer a day or two later in the sink dozens of dead fruit flies were floating in it.

I don't know exactly why.. maybe the smell lures them in and they get overwhelmed or something like that. I only know that it works.

Get rid of the fruit, neutralize any standing water (think unused sinks, drains, etc.-drain-o or a cap full of bleach will do the trick), make sure there is no gunk in the bottoms of your trashcans and that the garbage disposal is clean.

Raid will kill them on contact but will do nothing to prevent breeding.

For a brief moment, it sounded as if you might drank them. I just had to make sure. :p

My skank landlord had FLIES hatching in her fuckin basement....Flies. In her basement she has a room fulla food that she literally steps on to get through the room...I should post a pic of this room so it could be believed.....but I mean WTF could they be feeding on though? It can't be Pillsbury Cake Mix...nothing smelled down there that I could detect like rotting whatever...?!???

Thank your god that by the time I got back from outta town the problem was taken care of....but I wonder what the hell was in that basement?!?!?!

Something I did to get rid of them (although this was entirely by chance) was leave out a bottle of red wine, and they all fly into it attracted by the smell of it. Fortunatly, the wine in question was the cheapest brand I could find at the supermarket.

Can this wine be cooking sherry?

I guess I should consider myself lucky. Tasmania doesn't have fruit flies and we have strict quarantine laws to prevent them arriving here. Western Australia also doesn't have fruit flies.
