How do you rate the Voyager characters?

F Yeah:
The Doctor - BRILLIANTLY played by Picardo and one of the most well-developed and explored characters in Trek

Tuvok - Again, brilliantly played, but woefully underused. Tim Russ really knocked it out of the park when there was a Tuvok episode and he's always a highlight of a good ep when written well.

Pretty cool:
Seven - She was overused, but had a lot of good stories even if some of them felt repetitive.

Tom Paris - I liked him from the outset, and he grew and gained a purpose in life, which was very entertaining to watch. Plus he was the most 'human' of the Voyager crew to me.

Kes - I think she was a good character even though I think the Ocampa were an idiotic idea. It saddens me though that she only had a few honestly good episodes. At least she left on a high note. Fury never happened, Fury never happened, Fury never happened...

Torres - Not really one of my favorites, but she did have some good episodes here and there, and being with Tom brought out some good moments and episodes.

Oh, I forgot you were even here:
Chuckles - More wooden than a giant sequoia redwood and about as entertaining on most days. When a script calls him to actually emote he can be very good like in Scorpion or Distant Origin, but is sadly rare.

Harry - Poor, dumb bastard. When he's not getting killed, he's getting locked out of the computer or failing miserably with women. Mostly just a device to make Tom look good by comparison.

Get it away, get it away!!:
Neelix - as if this surprises anyone. Thing is, I actually liked him in Drive and Fair Trade, and Philips is a good actor, but he was written so obnoxiously so often...

Janeway:
She...honestly doesn't fit into any other category. I hate her in Equinox, I love her in Hope and Fear, I feel indifferent to her in others, I'm not sure I HAVE a solid opinion on Janeway because the writers didn't either.

Janeway

I enjoy watching Captain Janeway but was she even a character? I mean, I don't understand her whatsoever and really have no handle on what she is actually like.
As is common with all the characters from Janeway onwards, the writers did a bad job of showing us what her life was actually like aboard Voyager beyond working. Sure she was a workaholic but I didn't really see much else to her personality,.
She was much too inconsistent and I didn't feel any real emotion ever coming from her partly for that reason.
I really feel that establishing a Janeway-Chakotay relationship would have been the key to making her seem more human and would have allowed be to be able to identify with her.

Good points on Janeway. I know folks refer to the later seasons as the Seven/Doctor/Janeway show but while Janeway may have been on the screen a lot you rarely got insight into her character. She had more character-driven scenes in the earlier seasons - many of them tied in the novel "Mosaic". Unfortunately, later the writers used her mainly as a foil for the Doctor and Seven who they preferred writing for.

That being said, I enjoy watching Captain Janeway the most. I REALLY dislike Sisko, dislike Archer and like Picard but not strongly.

The Doctor
Tuvok

B'elanna Torres

Kes

Dislike/Don't Care:
Harry Kim

I won't get too detailed into my reasons unless someone asks. Preface: I loved VOY because of its lovable characters.

Harry: A. Always liked and identified with "ensign eager". Nice, fun, competent teammate.

Tom: A. Added humor, was likable, and grew up. Liked his relationship with BLT. He also became somewhat of a gentleman by refusing B'Elanna's advances during her "blood fever". Was ready and willing to make sacrifices. Also, unlike all other AQ people, he wasn't in a hurry to get home. A nice contrast. He enjoyed the adventure.

B'Elanna: A. One of my favorite all time characters. Loved her latent hostility, straightforward demeanor, and self-control. She tried hard to do what was most prudent and best for the crew. For example, trying to take the hit in Prime Factors. Liked her backstory.

Chakotay: A. Yep, I liked him. A decent, honorable man, calm and with good leadership and charisma. I wish we'd seen more of him. He did take charge when necessary.

Neelix: A-. I used to not like him, but now I find his optimism and resourcefulness a good addition. I no longer see him as comic relief. Didn't like his makeup, though, especially in early seasons. And he wasn't a dunce. Consider his eventual perception of the lying prisoner. He would not be fooled again.

EMH: A-. Used to be my favorite. Got a little out of hand but still great and grew a lot.

Seven: A-/B+. I didn't like her catsuits or uncharacteristic sexual provocative and impractical dress. But Ryan turned in a fantastic performance for a difficult role. She defined VOY in its latter half. And she had great lines and delivered them well.

Tuvok: A. My all-time favorite Vulcan. Outstanding.

Janeway: A-/B+. Biggest burden, had to carry the show. Mulgrew was terrific. I thought she portrayed an alone captain realistically. She was also distinct enough from the other captains. She was very tough and uncompromising (if somewhat inconsistent.) No complaints from me. I liked how she wrestled with trying to not be too distant from the stranded crew.

Naomi/Borglings: A. They were the best child actors I've seen on Trek.

Kes: C. She was fine, but I started reruns after she left, so it was hard for me to get into her character. Lien was fine, though.

• Who else? Ok, Seska: F. Never liked her as a villain.

Recurring characters: Incomplete. all mostly interesting (sans Seska). Just didn't see them often enough. :(

• Ayala: hehehe. Good ol' Ayala. And Chell and Vorik. ;)

I'm probably forgetting some. I liked Reg and Troi.

For aliens:

Liked:

• Hierarchy
• Devore
• Voth
• Vaadwar
• Krenim
• Talaxians
• Dreaming aliens
• Cataati
• Bo'mar
• Malon
• Nymeri
• Ferengi
• Hirogen
• probably more

Did not like:

• Kazon
• a few others (Steth, the forgetting ones who erased people's memory, Penk)

This really is a loaded question. rate as characters in the literary analysis sense or rate them as to whether or not I like them...different standard entirely.

Loved: Seven Of Nine
Liked: The Doctor, Janeway & Tom Paris
Was Cool With: Tuvok, Neelix & Chakotay
Meh: B'Elanna, Kes & Icheb
Disliked: Harry Kim

DevilEyes: I have to say that all VOY characters, for the most part, had lots of potential (except for Neelix, who was a bad concept from the start, and Kim, who was an uninteresting concept from the start) but were hurt by the inconsistent writing and the writers apparently just not caring enough to put serious character development above 'whatever we need to make them do in this week's plot'.

I remembered with Kes, in the beginning, was humble, and always attached to Neelix. She seemed to be in love with the guy in the beginning, at least that was how she was portrayed to be..

Later on, not too long before her character left the ship, she began wearing more figure fitting outfits very similar to what Seven wore.

The next thing we know, she is shown to be attracted to other crew members or even aliens..

It was as if she was being put in a Seven of nine mold before Seven even joined the crew.

With Voyager, it was like, it can be good at times, and had great potential. great actors, but yet something was always missing..

I really liked Tuvok, I think he might have been my favorite. I loved the fact that he was Vulcan, a family man (remember "Innocence," Tuvok with the kids? Awww!), and someone who despite numerous temptations remained loyal to his wife. I loved his friendship with Janeway, the parental role he took on with Kes, his antagonistic relationship with Neelix (shades of Odo/Quark) and, as others have mentioned, his dry wit.

I did grow to like Seven on Nine, although to be fair I might have liked her more if she wasn't rammed down our throaghts. At times it felt like they should rename Voyager "The Seven of Nine Show." This is especially irritating when you consider there were other characters that were woefully stagnant, marginzalized, and underdeveloped, such as Harry Kim and Chakotay. Oh, and I'll never forgive the writers for that ridiculous, out-of-nowhere Chakotay/Seven pairing but that's a discussion for another thread.

I can understand why many people disliked Neelix but I didn't mind him. The problem was they only gave him one really "serious" episode.
