How Do You Feel About Chakotay?

I've always wished the Val Jean had not been destroyed. It would have made for an interesting dynamic but with the first female captain it was all or nothing. A shame but it was the 90's.

That would have added some interesting opportunities for sure ; based on the reg's from Exquinox , Janeway would still have authority .... except if the Maquis ship was still around would Chakotay have been so willing to follow star fleet regs ?

I think they could make it work since his ship was inferior to Voyager. A quick line about how that class of star ship is designed to have a full overhaul every 10 years, no chance of it lasting all the way to the alpha quadrant without support form a mother ship. I think the show did a good job of showcasing Voyager as a state of the art star fleet vessel, and they still ran low on power and such.

They could still use the lost of life during the arrival as a reason to intermix the crews. Maybe B'Ellana is the only one left alive who knows how to manage the type of warp core on Voyager, but then a junior engineer from Voyager needs to go and help on the Val Jean since they need someone to engineer.

Does anyone know if the Star Trek comics ever do a 'what if' series like Marvel does ? this could be a neat idea

When I was a kid I recall my folks going to this restaurant a lot where you would get a little bit of parsley on the side of your plate. I guess it was a garnish. I remember asking my mother what it was for, if I should eat it. She said nobody ate it. It was just there for some reason. Maybe you could eat it. She left the option open that I could eat the sad looking sprig of parsley. I didn't. No one did. I wonder if anyone ever did.

Parsely was supposed to be there, but no one knew why or what it was for. I don't see parsley on plates anywhere much anymore. Chakotay was parsely.

Well, if nothing else, I liked eating parsley...

People ... pee-PULL!!!! Let's try to keep focused, shall we? If Seven could learn to love Chakotay, maybe you could, too ...

Love him or consider him as a life size test, what after used his holo program for a short period, could be quite logical choice? Sorry but like a lot of people here and elsewhere, I didn't find their romance really believable, according to their scene of flirt!:wtf::p

I know it's not believable, but it's committed to celluloid already, Ghislaine -- 20 YEARS committed! That's a long time, you'll admit. I suspect that after VOYAGER returned home, their love grew ... and endured. After all, Chakotay's experienced with Borg women. Doctor Riley Frazier used her sexual healing on Chakotay in the episode "Unity," and showed him things they never taught him at Starfleet Academy. And he brought all of that knowledge, all of that experience and expertise to bare on his relationship with Seven. Naturally, in combination with her own attraction for the commander, it turned Seven into a huge Chakotay fan. In this light, it seems only fitting. I mean ... I'd rather he'd gotten with Kellin, myself. She was much more beautiful than Seven and brought so much to the table and yet? It wasn't meant to be. The character of Chakotay was promised to another, whose name ... is Seven.

Possible but we will never know as everything has stopped when Voyager & her crew came home 20 years ago. And IF a Voyager reboot was eventually made (
since it is fashionable for a couple of years) one day or even an eventual sequel, this scenario would be abandoned as the unexpected romance in the final was quite unpopular, whatever from J/C, S/EMH shippers or just because the acting of Beltran and Ryan was unconvincing.
Plus, the only time where Chakotay reappeared in a "fan film" movie on Voyager theme, The Renegades, under Caldero's name to avoid Universal/CBS anger, he was older, alone and had the expression of a guy, who was worn by life &
dumped by his beautiful for a while (besides, no mention of any female companion, current or past).

Now, obviously, I can't speak to what will happen to Chakotay & Seven's love, if VOYAGER came back, but I suspect you're right about their story being neglected, or purposefully overlooked. But it would be very unfortunate, indeed, if Chakotay came back home and were left to live a lonely existence after Seven went her own way, again. I don't see him as someone who'd be alone for long ... The Renegades had it wrong, which isn't unusual for a fan film. You know how it goes. Harry Kim is unfortunate in that way. When we caught up with Harry, we'd find him to be lonely ... desperate. But not Chakotay ...

I feel like Chuckles and the Maquis would've preferred to go off on their own, had their ship survived. Without a ship, Voyager was basically their only option at the time, and after sharing trauma in hostile Kazon space, the Maquis grew to actually like Voyager and the Starfleet crew.

In terms of Chuckles himself, he was most interesting when he opposed Janeway (Scorpion, Equinox) instead of being just another yes-man bridge officer.

I'm just glad that Chakotay didn't have the choice about teaming up with Voyager, and Janeway, in particular, because it changed his entire outlook. Case-in-Point, "Future's End" ...

CHAKOTAY: Listen, I used to think violence could be the solution to a problem, but it's not true.
PORTER: You are no patriot.
CHAKOTAY: I was a freedom fighter, so I thought.

Chakotay changed in a significant way, just as Seven found herself changing significantly. She even got to ditch that piece over her eye, so that she could love. That's another thing these two have in common. You know, for a long time, I really couldn't bring myself to appreciate Chakotay's getting with Seven. I mean, she's got great hair and from his point of view, a great body, but ... I found myself agreeing with those who were against the relationship. And now?

Now, I find myself warming up to the idea. Long, lasting marriages have been based on less, or so I've been told. So much less. I was watching that scene where Seven turns to Chakotay, ready to end it, because she didn't want to see him get hurt and Chakotay assured her that risk of getting hurt is all part of being Human. And they kissed passionately, secure in the knowledge that their love had survived its first test. And this time ... I could see some spark of love, in her. In both of them.

Speaking of life after Voyager, does anyone believe Chakotay would get his commission back and re-up Voyager and go back to the stars on Starfleet missions?

^ ^ I could see him on another Earth jungle expedition in search of the Rubber Tree People, given his newfound insight from "Tattoo."

In my head, after Voyager returns to the AQ he goes back home, to see what remains of his world, pay respects to those lost, and help with whatever rebuilding is underway. There he becomes entangled in a group of leftover Maquis wanting to pick up the fight against the Cardassians again--believing that, given their weakened state, they will crumble. The "New Maquis" has considerably more support, what with all the refugees in the region left over from the war, but few of them were involved in the original group (seeing as how most of them are either dead or imprisoned).

With only a few others beside him, Chakotay manages to turn the tide of their mood, encouraging them to turn away from bloodshed and instead focus on what the first Maquis had seen as their endgame, a free and independent region. Ultimately, he is killed by the leader of the New Maquis, who won't have anything else but the eradication of the Cardassian people. Chakotay becomes a martyr, dying in the name of peace, which sees the leader deposed and the New Maquis make themselves known, announcing over subspace that the former DMZ and some of the systems in close proximity heaviest hit by the war will now be governed as the "Colonial Alliance".

As a mark of respect the new flagship of the Alliance is named the Chakotay.

I think Chakotay, of all the Maquis , is the most likely to return to star fleet for sure. Whether it is as part of Voyagers crew or not. He always seemed comfortable with the command structure and wasn't he the only one of the Maquis who had previously had a star fleet commission ?

a New Maquis movement would have a better chance really. The Cardassian government is barely existant at the end of ds9. they could hardly have done anything to stop incursions, and somehow I think the Federation's Give-a-Damn about that issue would have been somewhat broken.

I think Chakotay would be so bold, along with B'Elanna to search for their fallen comrades and what remained of their people. There were episodes of Voyager where the two of them expressed frustration they were not home to defend their territory in the Bad Lands. Whether Paris Riker tags along with them is up in the air, but Chakotay and Torres' bond were tight enough they would be compelled to find them, it would be like their personal quest of finding home. Voyager missed the boat on exploring the main crew's definition of home because as individuals it should be different or at least slightly altered.

I agree, completely! Take away Chakotay and what do you have? The very heart and soul of the show sucked out. And despite creative differences and various problems with the show, Robert Beltran stuck it out and gave VOYAGER exactly what it needed in a Leading Man for 7 years. Chakotay makes VOYAGER worth it ...

Now see, this woman I felt sad she died. The rest of the characters? Unlikable. Good riddance. If you think it's a good idea to jump to your seat** like it's a Chucky Cheese ball pit, you deserve to die. Grab a rail, man! It's right there! **yes, I know he was 'flung' but it was bad jumping ;)
