How do you compare PIC to TNG?

A different type of ranking and comparison thread. Where do you think Picard stands compared to TNG?

My preferences (in order) are:

1. PIC
2. Mid-TNG
3. Late-TNG
4. Early-TNG
5. TNG Movies

I prefer TNG, but it's impossible for me to gauge it outside the context of having been a kid when I first watched it. I'm much pickier about media now than I was then.

One thing I do think helps TNG hold up better to rewatching though: I can ignore the crappy episodes entirely. Modern serialized Star Trek is not so lucky.

I agree with your rankings. But that #1 might just be new Pi - CAR - d smell. ;) I'll have to see how it stands up once the new wears off of it. I do think, though, that it stands a chance of staying #1. To me, TNG was Federation pretty obviously propaganda (with the occasional peek behind the curtain, like Picard being willing to let a whole civilization die for the Prime Directive, the rape gangs on Tasha's world, and some of the really screwy things going on back on Earth with the Admiralty) being demonstrated by the best of the best aboard the flagship, and PIC is getting to the truth of things.

I have a hard time comparing them fairly because they are so different in terms of what they are trying to accomplish. Subjectively, I don't like PIC as much as TNG or the TNG movies, but I still like it.

my list with switch one and two, but otherwise that's about right.

5. TNG Movies

Switch 1 and 2 for me and we agree completely.

I like TNG. Picard's first season is mostly superior in every way.

TNG is weird. It has some solid gold classics like "Q Who" and "Yesterday's Enterprise", but they're surrounded by mountains of bollocks like "Justice", "The Masterpiece Society" and "The Price"

Picard doesn't have any single episodes that hit those highs, but it's intended as one 10-part story. It has scenes, particularly the final goodbye between Picard and Data, that eclipse anything in Next Gen. It also doesn't come anywhere near any of TNG's low points.

The Next Gen movies never hit the lows of the series (Insurrection is tone deaf, but it's no "Justice"), and have some amazing high points. First Contact is one of the best Trek movies. I love Nemesis although I know I'm in the minority of hardcore Trekkies. Generations is flawed (Picard is handed the means to save his family but they're forgotten as soon as his scene with Troi is over) but watchable.

Picard is intended as a different kind of experience, a companion piece to everything above. So comparisons don't really work. It's an epilogue.

I don't tend to bother comparing them like many on this forum do.

I am quite happy to take each show on its own merits as long as it looks right for the era, hence why I was fine with the Starfleet ships on Discovery but not with the Klingon ships.

That was my approach to Discovery and Picard.

Comparing Star Trek: The Next Generation to Star Trek: Picard is a bit like comparing the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring to Season One of Game of Thrones. They may be in the same broad genre, but they're doing entirely different things and directed at entire different audiences; the former is more archetypal, and the latter is more deconstructivist.
