For me, I suspect Picard will lose its luster over time. I really enjoyed parts of, particularly the character work for Picard himself, but I doubt I will ever watch it again. Serialization really works against these shows when they're uneven. It's just not worth sitting through the whole thing again, while individual episodes of TNG still appeal.
I don’t think you really can compare Picard to TNG yet. Picard has 1 season. TNG has 7 seasons plus 4 movies. Even if you cut TNG to 3 or 4 seasons. I would say let Picard finish first. but if you want to compare Season 1 of each, I would give the nod to Picard but it’s close.
they dont even compare. TNG shits on Picard. I enjoyed most of Picard up to the final couple of episodes. But even the best episodes of Picard dont hold a candle to the best of TNG. Nor does it come close to the best of Deep Space 9. I mean they legit made Picard a android. an old android. okay.
right, but I’m speaking more to a completion. Get Picard to the end of season 3, let it tell it’s story then compare it to TNG.
What happens if they never complete it? You’ll never be able to compare? It’s not about a 1:1 comparison. How can it be? The number of episodes and format are completely different. How can one compare TOS to any series given how distinctly different it is, from its time. Yet we do. The question is a completely subjective question of feeling. And it will always be.
It doesn't take me long to figure out whether or not I like one show better than another. Picard is more suited to my tastes than TNG is. Unless Picard somehow radically changes in a way that I've never seen shows change before, and suddenly goes in the complete opposite direction the rest of TV is moving in, I project that I'll continue to like it about as much as Discovery. But it's clear that the Berman Era series ruined some people's perceptions when it comes to judging TV series. "Wait two or three seasons!" isn't normal. Those shows have just conditioned people who like those Star Trek series the most to think that way.
Even if there were another six seasons of PIC, even if it went to twenty episodes a season, these first ten I will judge distinctly as I judge early TNG. And they have been a breath of fresh air, despite their problems.
I don't because they are their own unique thing. In terms of overall series, I will always have TNG and DS9 at top. Picard had a decent first season. I hope it continues into the second.
And the plus side is that Picard isn't a replacement to TNG. To misquote a popular phrase "We will always have (insert favorite Trek series here)."
The Next Generation will forever be an often flawed but seminal series - an important link in the story of television. Picard will be relegated to middling curiosity within a few years of its completion. There is no comparison.
