How do U feel about Sac. of Angels stock footage in finale?

Mutara Nebula 1967

It was very jarring to see the same two Federation ships buy it as they did in Sacrifice of Angels.

It's kind of disapointing given the higest of standards DS9 lived by (unlike say V-The Series that was 99.9% stock footage from the minis) to pull out stock footage that would be so instantly recognizable.

This again? It was a montage sequence that was about 5 seconds long. Everything else in the battle was brand new. Why does everyone here seem to think the battle was all stock footage?

Personally, I wonder why they added that little montage. Was it meant to be taken out when the episode was cut into a two-parter? Was the episode or battle running too short? Was it intended to be so recognizable?

I think there was quite a lot of stock footage used in the finale. Most of it seemed old to me rather than new.

I have two reactions to the use of the stock footage -

First, it is a series finale, and I can't believe that they would re-use earlier footage, even such cool footage as that...

Second, and on the other hand, that footage was SOOO cool, almost movie caliber, probably the best space battle footage from all of Trek history, that it was hard not for them to get double returns from it.

I think they had to reuse footage because the airdate was moved up a week so they had less time to do new effects. And budget may have been a problem as well.

It didn't bother me in the least. It did an effective job conveying chaos and death. I was viscerally engaged. I might also point out though that I've never had an issue with reused footage or matte shots anyway.

*yawn*

In truth, I didn't even notice it while I was watching the series on TV for the first time.

You have to remember, DVD sets weren't even around then. And the original viewers watched those episodes almost two years apart. Who would remember?

Answer: Only the obsessive compulsive viewers who insisted on taping and KEEPING every episode of Trek on VHS. And add a room onto their house for all of their tapes.

Additionally, I would rather have had them put the budget into paying all the recurring character actors for making their appearances in the finale than to stick it into 2 minutes of DS9 Big Space Battle No. 52 (or whatever).

I mean, we get it: it was a BIG. SPACE. BATTLE.

Was that not clearly conveyed enough for some people?

I mean, those shots were expensive as HELL to make back then - and there was plenty of that battle which was NOT stock footage.

So who cares if a few minutes were?

I'd rather have all the recurring characters.

*shrug*

It was pretty noticable for me and after reading the novel of the story the use of stock footage really hurts the battle because the tactics of the battle was totality lost and of course the second big battle at Cardassia Prime was completely taken out. :cardie:

I didn't notice. I'll have to go back and watch both of them again.

I rewatched, and the reused footage sequence is defiantely longer than I remembered. But certainly everything before and after it was new. The Breen ships are the easiest way to tell. Very little footage from TCFoE would have worked for this episode.

The problem is that the battle is actually fairly short to begin with, and it's mainly dealt with on the Defiant's bridge. Therefore the only terribly lengthy sequence of ships battling without story/dialogue is the reused footage sequence.

I thought it was fine and didn't mind. It was at least better than the Defiant having the Valiant registry number in the last episodes of Season Six after Valiant...

Re: How do U feel about Sac. of Angels stock footage in fina

It was a compelling episode and I never noticed the the vidio that was reused...I found out about that here. Whoever first reported it well...that was a good eye for detail. But so what? I wouldn't hold that against the production team...they're on a budget.

Re: How do U feel about Sac. of Angels stock footage in fina

In was disappointed, but it doesn't bother me too much, but the battle was mostly stock footage of SoA, ToTP, TCFoE, the only new shots were of the defiant doing a loop, and of a dominion ship chasing a miranda before breaking off, as i recall, but, then, I haven't watched the final chapter in a couple of years.. :(

This is all moot anyway - at some point they'll probably redo all the SFX for HD.

Or maybe they'll just replace the current stock footage with HD stock footage? :D

Re: How do U feel about Sac. of Angels stock footage in fina

I feel that it should really go in the FAQ.

Re: How do U feel about Sac. of Angels stock footage in fina

I never noticed it. If I ever do, I can just rationalize it as being the same combatants performing standard battle maneuvers.

That's a ridiculous exageration. As I said, the new footage is easy to tell because of the presence of the Breen ships.

Re: How do U feel about Sac. of Angels stock footage in fina

I'm amazed that there are people that couldn't tell the footage was reused material. I knew, not only from having taped SoA and watched it several times, but after seeing the first scene of the final battle and then eventually the reused footage. Hell, it didn't even have the Breen and Romulans in it and was too cluttered with Cardassian and Jem'Hadar vessels. Compare the new footage with the reused material and you will see that it does not work at all as the original opening of the final battle shows a much larger battlefield and it is not as cluttered either. It sticks out like a sore thumb. This really hurts the finale. If they had tweaked the footage to remove ships and add the Breen and Romulans, it may have worked better.

Re: How do U feel about Sac. of Angels stock footage in fina

I remember the numerous shots that were reused footage sticking out like an extremely sore thumb way back in 1999 when the finale aired and I was in the sixth grade. This was before the extensive re-runs and before the DVDs.

Trying to insert the exploding Klingons from Generations and a shot of Garak (nearly) exploding from just a few episodes before (IIRC) really make the sequence weak. And it was the series finale, too! It's not like they saved up their money for the equally weak fire cave sequence.

Time for a DS9 HD-R with brand new footage for the finale!

And some shields flaring here and there as well.

:D
