How do/did you feel about the return of the Enterprise-D?

It's like sending a destroyer that was commissioned during WWII out to fight alongside the USS Gerald R. Ford.
More accurate timeframe-wise, it would be like sending a destroyer that was commissioned when TNG was on the air to fight alongside the USS Gerald R. Ford. Among the ships that have served in her carrier group are the USS Normandy (CG-60), a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser launched in 1988, and USS Ramage (DDG-61) and USS Carney (DDG-64), Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers launched in 1994...all while the Enterprise-D was in active service on our TV screens.

I was exaggerating to make a point.

My point was that the E-D was outdated. (She was a museum piece -- she was cobbled together with parts from two different ships!)

Her outdated tech was the very thing that enabled her to complete her mission against the Borg in Picard S3.

That said, why drive a Model-T when a Lamborghini Murcielago is available?

The crew walking onto the bridge? Best scene in all of Trek, if you ask me. Bringing back the Enterprise-D was a brilliant move on Terry's part. It was one of the few things in life that exceded my expectations. Who would have thought that we'd ever see the TNG crew, reunited on the Enterprise-D, saving the day? I wish the bridge was fully lit during the reveal, though.

A few other points:

- I always took Geordi's line about the engines to mean that the entire secondary hull was from the Syracuse. No confusion for me, there.

- I definitely would not have wanted to see the bridge from Generations. It had to be the TV bridge. That's what fans know and grew up with.

My favorite part about the retirement/age argument is that the Titan-A/Ent-G just looks older and less modern than the -D by virtue of explicitly being designed to harken back to the TOS movies. I mean sure we got some lines about the -D being outdated or whatever but the narrative also doesn't really do that justice when we get to watch it do all the hero ship pew pew stuff and a Return of the Jedi Death Star run after spending the rest of the season watching the Titan-A get beat to crap and run away every episode. Bad booking sure, but another reason I think the -D's presence for nostalgia didn't work very well. Shouldn't undercut your new hero ship like that.

The whole point was to highlight Seven's skill as a tactician (She created a warp core out of spare parts on Voyager. She has a flair for doing the seemingly impossible.)

It's one thing to fight the Borg with a ship as big and ultra-modern as the Enterprise-E. It's quite another to do it with an itty-bitty thing like a Connie-III.

Ignoring the fact the current iteration of the D is in fact a combination of two ships, it shouldn't otherwise be considered "outdated" or unsuitable for service. The admittedly non-canon Tech Manuals back in the day said the Galaxy class had a life expectancy of a hundred years, which can be supported canonically by the evidence seen throughout TNG and the other 24th century shows of the longevity of the Excelsior class. So with that in mind, at over thirty years the Galaxy class should still be in its prime.

The Enterprise-D was clearly the hero ship of this season. Not the Titan-A/Enterprise-G. The whole point of getting the TNG crew back together (including the D) was to show that these people and their ship still ‘got’ it. The Titan was just the plot device that got them to that point.

Why do so many people prefer the Generations version of the bridge?

I think the Enterprise D being "outdated" played a role in why she couldn't be assimilated by the Borg when Jack activated the beacon.

One of Geordi's daughters said earlier in the season that all the ships in Starfleet "talk to each other", meaning they were all connected to the Starfleet network. Plus, I think it helps that the ship was turned off when she was docked in Hanger Bay 12 at the Fleet Museum.

I would've liked to have seen the Ready Room and the corridors in addition to the bridge but they were working with a minimal budget as is (or I guess "as was" in this case) and barely could afford the bridge recreation project but Matalas made it work in the best way so I'm still happy they brought back the D. :D

I love the Generations bridge version, it gave the bridge feel more alive

The vibe I got from the Generations version of the bridge was "too much activity" and those two side wall panels is what gave it off. The only thing I like about the Generations bridge is how darker and more dim the lighting is compared to the TV bridge. So yeah, I prefer the TNG TV bridge, especially the Season 4-7 bridge.

The bridge set was destroyed after filming

No, it wasn't. According to what I read somewhere there were talks for it to be torn down but Matalas fought for it not to be. Besides, I more recently read somewhere it's been preserved to a museum so fans can visit it.

Speaking of the Generations bridge, given how the 1994 bridge set was destroyed during production on that movie for them to destroy the 2023 bridge would be a sacrilege.

According to what I read somewhere

That is not an actual affirmation.
Since Picard, several sources have reported it was indeed demolished. Your and a earlier post today are the only two times people said it wasn't.

As for the rest of your post, it's all here-say and 'someone said somewhere that they heard'. Official word is 'big baddaboom' on the whole set. As in standard.

Well since you're so big on official sources, where are these "several sources" confirming it was destroyed?

You know, for someone with such a big audacity to call someone out for here-say I don't see you posting proof from an official source backing up your claims. Put up or shut up.

Have people lost the ability to simply search for information? This took ten seconds:

Dave Blass: The set is stored in Archives. They decided that they were going to hold on to this.

And it wasn't until almost a year later that audiences got to see it. And then everyone's like, "We better have saved the set." And I'm like, "Yes, yes. I threw a tantrum and they saved the set."

I thought bringing back the 1701-D was unnecessary but welcome.

Why do so many people prefer the Generations version of the bridge?

It made the bridge seem alive. On TNG it felt like it had too much empty space given how big it was. The extra stations made it feel like more of a true command center.

plus Worf finally gets a chair…

I enjoyed it enough. Was it fan pandering? Yeah sure. Still enjoyed it...

The one thing I don't get though. Is why they didn't update the D's bridge. All the ships from the Generations era are archaic looking compared to Pikes/ Kirks/Burnham's era. They should have not had carpet. Make it look bigger. Lots of bright led lights, window view screen and shiny as a new penny. But we got the bridge from the old outdated 1980's TV show. Back when they used cheap material and stuff you could find in any hotel lobby of the time...

Because it's pandering. As others have insisted to me, "you don't mess with comfort food."
