How did everyone survive the Trek Drought?

For me, the Trek "drought" really began after DS9 ended in 1999. VOY and ENT were mediocre and didn't do much for me. But I was actually fine with having this "drought" because it allowed me to branch out and explore new things. I watched new shows. I kept myself occupied with wonderful new experiences from shows like Angel, Lost and BSG.

Of course, the novels were still going strong. I've been a fan of Treklit's resurgence over the last several years.

Lost got me through it. It premiered during Enterprise's final season on the air and it continues. Only, what, four months until the final season?

For me, the famine continues, since I don't accept the J.J. thing as part of Trek but rather something that prevents real Trek from being made.

Pretty much the same way I feel, though I haven't been a real big fan of the franchise since DS9 ended. In the meantime, fan fiction, both continuations and original series have been filling that void. Actually there's a lot of fan work out there that's better than a lot of the official stuff that's been made in quite a while.

The drought for me was between the end of TNG and two years ago when I started buying DVD's. TNG was the last regularly scheduled series in my area. DS9 and Voyager were pre-empted by sports most of the time. Enterprise was not available in my state. After watching Enterprise on SciFi for a bit I bought the DVD for that series and have been watching ST steadily ever since. I'm about the start watching the Voyager DVD's. Wish me luck.

^ You might be surprised - it isn't my favorite Trek, but it's a lot of fun, and while the quality is variable, there are a lot of entertaining episodes and some truly excellent ones. I think most people who aren't actually anti-Voyager will enjoy it.

Echoing JustKate: I was surprised by Voyager. I watched it for the first time in reruns on Spike when I had my second baby and he wouldn't nap anywhere but ON me. So Voyager was his nap time and my down time, and I really fell in love with it. It's got its imperfections for sure, but the endearing characters and the "it's-us-against-the-universe" feel sold it for me. If you give it a fair chance, I bet you'll enjoy it.

I feel I should give an addendum to kes7 and JustKate's thoughts on VOY. I think it's a good show with enough good to surprise you, but! Expect a LOT of mediocrity, VERY little use of continuity, and don't expect Janeway to be portrayed even remotely consistently.

She was consistently inconsistent. I've known plenty of people like that in real life. Probably had some kind of chemical imbalance or something.

Watchng DS9 in one continuous run was really good. Thank god for box sets. Also I got more into SG1 and Atlantis and BSG and Babylon 5 which really helped fill the void which started after voyager ended.

I barely noticed the Great Trek Drought. I was too busy running around here shooting down all the doomsayers who thought Trek needed to "rest for ten (or fifty) years" or it was doomed due to "oversaturation." As far as TV was concerned, I have more shows on concurrently that I like right now than ever before.

Star Trek didn't really end for me, because the novels were (and are) still coming out.

Same here. I also tried out some of the fan films.

It's interesting to see how everyone who posted so far got through the drought. Most of it is similar to what I've done in addition to what I first posted, although I avoided the books and fan films because with my limited computer I had too hard a time accessing the fan films online and while I did read the books back in the day, I lost interest in them.

Also during the drought I gave VOY another shot and while it's probably the weakest of the shows (along with the first two seasons of Enterprise) it did have its moments.

I welcomed the "drought." I loved the thought that there would be no Trek for a while because the last movie and series were total crap.

Pretty much my method of 'survival' as well - I'd abandoned Enterprise during the second season and disliked Nemesis, so I'd actually been hoping for Star Trek to pull back as gracefully as possible until some fresh perspective could come along and make something better than we'd been getting. However, I didn't notice much of a drought - there were still books coming out, and given that I alternate reading those with Star Wars and various other smaller series with my Trek reading, it meant that I still had new books to read when the movie came out.
