How could they have made DISC fit in more with THE CAGE?

Except this is more than Vulcan being conquered. The entire Federation is conquered and Starfleet is gone. This is the kind of thing that would take decades to recover from. I never once got the impression TOS was about a Federation recovering from such a thorough and recent ass kicking.

In the trailer for next week’s episode they only say 20% is conquered, Saru was probably overreacting

I'm still going with The Words Spoken Onscreen. Apparently that counted for something last week.
It still does. And the words next week only say 20% not the entire federation

Anyways what I meant was that it was the map only showing part of the federation not the entire thing.

At least it appeared to be the same map we’ve seen in nearly every episode, which was only the territory right of the quadrant border

It DOESN'T look like it's from the future. AT ALL. It looks like it's from the 60s. You know why? Because it's from the 60s! We KNOW it's from the 60s. Those outfits would not be out of place in Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me. Discovery is looking forward at the future from NOW. Not 1967. And there is not one thing about Star Trek that doesn't scream 1967. Because that is when it was made. It helped to DEFINE the decade.

It still looks futuristic because the modern idea of "The Future" is still dictated by largely by 20th century futurist aesthetic because as a movement, futurism has been dead for a long time. 60s futurist design and fashion is still sleek and futuristic even till this day. Hell, a lot of our modern design is literally inspired by early-mid 20th century modernist movements. Bauhaus, Constructivism etc.

Another thing is, Fashion is cyclical, 80s nostalgia is coming back now and was popular in 2007-2010, 90s nostalgia has been popular for the past few years, 70s nostalgia was popular among Hipsters. We know, from looking on screen, that TOS looks like mid 20th century futurism, it's literally one of the single most iconic things about Star Trek as a franchise, the show should have gone with an updated 60s look. It would still look fine and the fact that 60s high fashion is far away from us today that it would look kind of alien to our sensibilities yet still look cool because it looks cool.

People who think Discovery could have legitimately gotten away with a 60s-inspired aesthetic are living in a fantasyland of their own making, and since visuals don't actually matter, trying to use the lack of a 60s aesthetic as a knock against the series falls apart pretty quickly.

Film and Television are visual mediums and aesthetics DO MATTER. Also Discovery could have easily got away with a 60 inspired aesthetic, I would actually bet money on the fact the show would be far more inconic and popular if it actually did.

Well, between Jason Isaacs and this, that’s me totally fucking spoilered isn’t it. Jesus. The rest of the world don’t get it on sundays.

Roll on the reset button, looks like am back to not liking DSC.

Thought this thread would be harmless.

Fashion is cyclical. Those could be from the late nineties.
It’s the one thing I liked about ENT. Everyone was in late fifties inspired gear when in civvies.
