Every single "hair" is actually a tentacle of sorts that absorbs tiny amount of food. Combine the many hairs it has and a few thousands tribbles and they can empty a whole storage tank of wheat in a couple hours.
What I'm more interested in is how they are able to give BIRTH.

They have one very sticky orifice each, which is used for eating, pooing, breeding, purring, screeching, giving birth - and wall-crawling.

I just came back from the new Harry Potter movie and I can positively say, the movie answered the question on Tribble's mouths.
