It's quite possible to sustain the hype until next May. Many movies (particularly franchise movies) are able to do that, especially when the news and possible rumors keep coming out. Just look at the last couple James Bond movies, or even the hype that was associated with the Star Wars prequels. If you think about it, the hype for the Star Wars prequels lasted nonstop from 1997 to 2005, despite the poor reception to the movies themselves. I think the new Star Trek movie (while not Star Wars in popularity) can maintain the hype.
