How are planets defended in Star Trek?

I think there were some mentions of planetary defense systems in Star Trek, but I cannot exactly understand this. So, can anyone explain to me how defending planets work in Star Trek?

Planetary Shields over highly populated Planets erected with a Orbital Satelite Shield Network that can fire back at any attackers.

Many StarBases within said Star System carrying Fighter Wings & Small StarShips ready to fight as needed.

In the episode 'Whom Gods Destroy' the penal colony had a planetary deflector shield.... even on the opposite side to said colony it was strong enough to withstand the Enterprise.

This implies that Earth (for example) has multiple planetary deflector shield generators. So powerful that not even the Dominion should be able to penetrate...

Anything else stinks.

Good catch.

On screen, it was called a "force field," so at least potentially something unrelated to starship deflectors, screens, or anything else, though possibly also of the same type as well.

The other penal colony seen in the first season in "Dagger of the Mind," on Tantalus V, also has such a "security force field."

Nah, it was before they invented the whole four quadrant thing. That was invented by TNG in '89. TWOK came out in '82.
But the word Quadrant has existed in the dictionary for some time to my recollection, long before TWoK existed.

Shouldn't they know of it's actual dictionary meaning?

Or was it word salad to slap on the script?

From TOS: "The Deadly Years" [transcript]:

KIRK: Message. Key to affliction may be comet which passed by Gamma Hydra Four. Said comet is now,
SPOCK: (consulting PADD) Quadrant four four eight, sir.
KIRK: Quadrant. All units are to be alerted for complete analysis of radiation and means found to neutralise it. Comet is highly dangerous. Kirk, commanding Enterprise. Immediately, Lieutenant. Let's go.

A quadrant is indeed a quarter of something, but the question is, a quarter of what? There's no reason why a quadrant can't be a fine-grained region, as illustrated in this dialog here. The term "Alpha Quadrant", and the presumption that use of the term quadrant implies it's one of the four quarters of the galaxy, either Alpha, Beta, Gamma, or Delta Quadrant, that's years in the future from 1960s Trek.

I'm sure they meant it to be a fourth of something in TWOK, just not the entire galaxy.
