How are fan productions legal?

I have the Of Gods and Men DVD that I got for free so I think Paramount is alright if things get distributed as long as it is free.

I have a free one, too, but I had to buy an 8x10 cast photo from their online shop to get the "free" DVD.

The producers of these fan made production do it with permission of CBS / Paramount under the condition it is not done for profit. Can ask for donations or limited advertising to cover production costs. These productions are not going to make enough profit to worry the studios.
