How about a Trek show about the moon colony?

Hey and they can use a new more original series title:

Star Trek: SPACE 2399: The first episode is about the dangers of the Anti-matter waste dump that Star Fleet has foolishly placed on the Moon; an the dump accidentally explodes it hurls the Moon out of Earth's oribit at Warp Speed...

Oh, wait...maybe that idea isn't sop original after all.

No you should be thinking more along the lines of "Total Recall" but if it was done by people who were wanting to win a emmy and not just for special effects and makeup. It will have scene after scene of people contemplating the meaning of life as they gaze out of the dome and look at the barren surface of the moon. A starfleet security officer will be addicted to drugs after he killed a innocent child by mistake. Their will be a mayor who is secretly working with the romulans while also dealing with a terminal illness. A gay Klingon who is still in closet because the klingons are still bigots and befriends a Ferengi female and decide to open up a targ ranch on the moon. A womanizer ex-starfleet captain who has issue''s with his mother. A precious child that lives on the street as a pick pocket artist.

I think we know too much about our own moon to make it worthy of a series set several centuries hence. I'm more partial to a future Starbase series. The Vanguard series of novels whetted my appetite for something along those lines.

That would also be fine but I do think any show like this should be a planet based show, simply because we haven't had that kind of Trek setting as of yet.

Well to me a planet based show would be fine. But it should be a planet that has characteristics and features that are not something we would see any other (or have seen) in another Star Trek series. I'm afraid it would amount to nothing but slightly different corridors.
And I would not like an alien planet that repeatedly looked like Vasquez Rocks from various angles. Or any other part of southern California.
Perhaps an interesting take would be a planet in an very elongated but fast moving orbited that suffered through extreme weather/climate changes in matters of days. Feet of snow in one episode, searing heat in another, massive, 35 meter tides moving in and out, frequent unpredictable earthquakes, prolonged solar eclipses.

Perhaps an interesting take would be a planet in an very elongated but fast moving orbited that suffered through extreme weather/climate changes in matters of days. Feet of snow in one episode, searing heat in another, massive, 35 meter tides moving in and out, frequent unpredictable earthquakes, prolonged solar eclipses.

A planet like that sounds far too unstable for a surface installation, where the safety of the personnel would be at risk. An orbital facility would make far more sense.

What if they were to have a show set around the research team studying the Dyson Sphere from "Relics". It would be a very sci-fi 'planetary' setting that could have quite a lot of scope.

... and any other week someone tries to blow them both up? being able to have those two stations unopposed pretty much sinks the idea of a 'disputed' system.

If you make a new show close to Earth, I would establish it as a base where Federation Starships are designed, and the show can focus on the adventures of Starfleet test pilots and engineers. It would be the 24th century version of The Right Stuff.

I really like this idea. You already have the Utopia Planitia shipyards established in Trek as a name you could use.

I hate to suggest yet another bloody prequel, but a series about the early days of expansion within the solar system and interstellar flight set largely on Earth, the moon and Mars could be interesting.

Colonies pushing for independence, first flights to nearby systems, negotiations with the Vulcans, setting up diplomatic relations...

With the exception of the Vulcans and nearby star systems, this reminds me of the Grand Tour series of novels by Ben Bova. If I had an insane amount of money to adapt that to a TV series (would have to be several years' worth of seasons to do it justice), that's the project I'd want to do (besides the Time Patrolman series by Poul Anderson).

The Grand Tour series covers establishing Moon colonies, manned missions (and a colony) on Mars, four novels make up the Asteroid Wars arc, and there are other novels dealing with Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, and Mercury. Sadly, Bova stated he had no plans to write novels about Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The last story arc in this series deals with humans getting out of the solar system and making contact with aliens.

I honestly don't think Star Trek could pull something like this off and keep me interested, if Enterprise and Discovery are any indication of what Hollywood thinks "modern" Trek should be.

Since special effects technology has advanced in recent years, how about this: a new "Star Trek" series where Starfleet finally has the ability to explore past the galaxy (maybe they stole transwarp from the Borg, or just found a wormhole to another galaxy). As we learned in TNG, there's a specific reason so many aliens in the Milky Way are Humanoid; so another galaxy could be an opportunity to meet some really ALIEN aliens.

And if this took place a few generations after "Voyager," then the new TV style would probably be a lot easier for viewers to take in.

that's just exporting known stuff to another galaxy = more of the same

the new ship needed to be a lot bigger than anything we've seen so far. probably a ship planned to be (in waves) overpopulated to found colonies in that other galaxy. (these colonies needed to be bigger than the usual garden variety ufp-colony to have a chance to survive.

however, i don't think the viewers swallow a new 'horta'-society every other week - especially not the us viewers.
