I absolutely loved the game and the comic book series. So how about a novel or two to help flesh out the crew a bit more, since it's probably unlikely we're going to get another game.
I'd read it.
Continuing is the tricky part. The storyline was highly variable, with a half-dozen major characters, including one of the two POV characters, potentially ending the game promoted, resigned, brainwashed, or dead.No reason not to continue the story in other mediums.

I imagine the original characters are the property of the devs, so they'd need a cut and input for anything to happen.
Nah, they just pick canon version and go from there, like they do with tons of other video games.Continuing is the tricky part. There could be another prequel or cameo in another novel where we only see the captain on-screen, but the game certainly seemed to be designed to be sequel-proof.
I was not the biggest fan of the game tbh. It was either a mostly interesting interactive movie with annoying and simple game mechanics jammed in, or a primitive and simple game with way too many cut scenes. But I'm glad others enjoyed it a lot more.

While I bought and read the comic spin-off, I am afraid I have very little recall of the storyline. It failed to make much impact on me.
Unlike the novel and audio adaptation of "Star Trek: Klingon", the audio adaptation of "Star Trek: Borg", and Diane Carey's 1997 novelization of "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy", all of which I really loved!
