How about a new Kirk rumor to keep us busy - Mike Vogel

OK, this is funny--while typing that post about about how this isn't a 2007 vs. 1967 thing, I realized I had to cut it short coz I didn't wanna miss Mad Men.

Well, I think it's funny... :D

"I live my life in the present... hey, Dragnet is on!" -- Al Bundy

Hmmm...

From those pics (and from a couple of clips i've seen) he doesnt seem confident enough. I know its only a couple of photo's but I'm not sensing the cockiness. Lets face it, Kirk can be an arrogant prick at times. One imagines he was even more so as a youth.

Forget "book on legs", Kirk needs to be a young, cool, cocky, arrogant son-of-a-bitch.

This guy looks a little vacuous to me.

Having said that, for all I know he could be a fantastic actor with the skills to pull all of these elements off...

Mike Vogel is good candidate but i like hear what others candidate is for the running for Kirk role(along it isn't Damon i am happy man :p)

I think it would help for me that I've never seen the actor in anything else. Someone with whom I'm familiar would be harder for me to accept. He looks good in some of the pics, but in some others, he looks kinda like Chris O'Donnell. If he sounds like Chris O'Donnell, then I'm done.

The bone structure of his face is similar to that of Shatner's. And call me overly observant, but he's got the same eyebrows as well. The main thing I don't like is his eyes. Someone made a good point earlier in this thread that Kirk's eyes should be penetrating. I'm not getting that from Vogel.

In regard to Kirk though, here's my question: Would you rather have a Kirk who looks a solid A, but acts a C+ as compared to Shat? Or would you rather have a Kirk who looks a B to B+ but acts an A?

I'm leaning toward the guy who's got the acting chops to faithfully portray Kirk. I'm really looking forward to this movie, so not much within reason could ruin it for me, but if we get an actor who plays a sub-par Kirk, that'll definitely be a disappointment. Granted, I don't think Abrams will let that happen, but one never does know.

The latter, definitely. If it comes down to a guy who doesn't particularly resemble Shatner but gives a powerful audition and a guy who looks like a young Shatner but is merely okay, they should go with the better actor.

It all depends on the acting. He looks as vaguely Kirk-like as Quinto does Spock-like. I'll have to rewatch 'Texas Chainsaw' if it ends up being him, but I sort of trust Abrams.

Hitting the gym won't help--the average metrosexual is in much better shape than the hunks of yesteryear;

Well then hooray for metrosexuals...uh what was the problem again? I'm looking at a good-looking, well-built guy. Who do you people want for Kirk, Paul Giametti? :rommie:

Hunky, yes, but does he wear a rug?

He doesn't?

Charlaton! Vile pretender!

You can't do Shat without the mat, and that's that.

I was hoping for Wallace Shawn.

Eh. Kirk should have penetrating eyes. This guy doesn't, though I suppose it's all in the performance.

His eyes are also the wrong color -- Shatner's eyes are brown. Of course, the photos don't show him acting the role. If he wore contacts and is a decent-enough actor, he might be able to summon up the necessary intensity.

Inconceivable!

...you wanted me to say that, didn't you? ;)

:wtf: Why this fascination with Vogel eyes. It doesn't matter what eyes he has besides i found bluegrey eyes much more penetrating then brown eyes.

Vejur, it's not the the color, it's the intensity conveyed by the possessor of those eyes--really, it's probably a matter of the musculature and bone structure surrounding the eye, a quality that conveys intelligence and focus even if the actor may lack said things.

Anyway, aren't we getting a little hung up on simple looks? By this logic, any high-end strip club could provide us a score of Hedda Gablers, Lady MacBeths or Antigones and any Chippendale could be the next DeNiro (the point I was making up-thread, Temis, in regards to metrosexual conditioning, just in case I wasn't clear). We say this guy is too pretty for Kirk, the CraigNotBond crew said Daniel Craig wasn't pretty enough for Bond--it's silly. My problem is that the guy simply does not convey seriousness. By contrast, Johhny Depp, perhaps the prettiest man who has ever lived, radiates intensity and intelligence (and insanity but hey, what are ya gonna do) and a formidable talent. It's not an either/or proposition and those who present it as such are being willfully obtuse--at least, I hope it's willfull.

I think this guy looks the part well enough, and has the sex appeal UWF Defiance pointed out. But the guy was a model?

From the clips, I liked that he was relaxed acting, he seems real and natural. But one of the things that made Shatner so great at Kirk was his Shakespearian background as an actor... to be able to play it large, something so often needed in sci-fi and fantasy acting. But hey, for all I know this kid has talent, and that can go a long way.

I checked out a link clip of the guy and so far I think he'd be a decent choice. I haven't seen him do the Shatner "crooked smile" bit though... but otherwise, he definitely works, and his voice isn't too dissimilar to Shatner's voice either... a bit lower, maybe, but not much.
