Horrific miscasting of the week - Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher?

/\Please allow me the chance to scoff at all the arrivists!:rommie:

Yeah,it's a small complaint especially when you consider how Treklit uses the images of all the major Trek protagonists.

This is almost as bad as Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake, thankfully someone had the good sense to abort that before it got past the first trimester. I like Cruise, thought his last film, knight and Day was a pretty fun flick and I'm looking forward to MI:4 but he is no Reacher. Someone please kill this quick. With fire.

I could definitely imagine Russell Crowe as Reacher. Here is the thing about Reacher: He is HUGE. The books go ON and ON about how massive he is. It's bought up literally every chapter. The guy is BIG, both tall and broad. Cruise is the polar opposite in terms of body type. It's a miscasting of epic proportion, even Cruise must know this. Body types that might work:

Sam Worthington
Hugh Jackman
Russell Crowe
The Rock

But Reacher is also in his forties, so you need someone who's a bit old. Plus the books come out every year so he should really be in a TV show. Four episodes a book, maybe. This is all kinds of fucked up.

^ Crowe isn't really much taller than Cruise, though in terms of screen personality he's a better fit for Reacher.

The Rock I could see - okay, Reacher is caucasian, but he has a French mother, so it wouldn't be a big stretch to make her French but of mixed race.

Jackman or Worthington aren't really my idea of Reacher but I'd prefer them to Cruise.

If they wanted a younger actor in the lead role, they could start with the prequel novel set in 1990 and maybe someone like Alexander Skarsgard or Chris Hemsworth in the lead. There's no great continuity between Reacher novels, so the order in which they film them doesn't matter.

I like the suggestion of Sam Worthington. He was the best thing in TS. Quite believable as a strongman.

^ Ray Stevenson. That could work, though after The Punisher his stock may have fallen as a leading man.

Adam Baldwin will still be Reacher in my head!

None of the objections to the casting will mean a thing to the vast majority of the millions of viewers who don't know the source material and are necessary to the success of the project.

Despite his recent PR problems, if you can sign Cruise for a project you don't say no if you want the money people to take you seriously.

Ray Stevenson, that's the guy.

I forgot he was in Punisher War Zone - still haven't seen that yet, though I do want to.

What PR problems?

Mostly related to Mindhead...sorry Scientology, but also the whole jumping up and down on Oprah's sofa still haunts him a bit. Not sure he's had a big hit in a while either, and given his high wages I do think some studios wonder if he's cost effective.

I actually quite enjoyed Knight and Day, I think he should let his inner loon out more often.

While not a perfect match for the role physically, I think Viggo Mortensen, in Eastern Promises/ History of Violence mode could be a good Jack Reacher. Bring in Cronenberg to direct and you could have a new Bourne series on your hands.
