Horizontal or vertical PC Case?

I prefer vertical PC cases. My desk is high enough, I don't need another 6 inches added to that height, making my monitor sit above my head.

I love the old tandys and stuff mainly because of the physical hardware. Those old model 3s and 4s were sturdy and well made. Plus they never collected dust. I find that the machines we have now with fans in the front and back attract more of the dust then the old machines. Spinning fans can cause a static attraction for dust. I find myself having to clean the filters on the PC every 3 months or so..

Plus the lots of circuit boards inside, made you feel like you had bought something substantial haha. Also nice to look at.

Old computers needed less airflow but some of them where quite cleverly designed so the air would move just right to cool components that needed a little extra cooling, a version of the Dutch Tulip PC had a harddrive mounted near the powersuply, which has a fan, so the air would move over it before being expelled by the PSU.

That's good design sense.

Just that those older machines were much easier to clean and maintain, you didn't have to clean the insides out so much.

Which ever case effectively dissipates heat across the surface of the case and away from other computer components would be the best type of case.

The question is though; how can the PC itself use the heat that is generated to increase its own performance?

In the old days the desktop casing made a lot of sense, no mouse, only the keyboard and a small screen, later on the CRT screens became so large that you would need more deskspace because putting them on top of the usual thin skin clone casing would usually crush the casing so the mini tower came along which was usually still on the desk next to the screen.

Installed a new PSU today Corsair RM750x and PC seems a lot quieter now than it did before..

Only bad thing was that you had to use almost all the cables.. My old one I only used 2 of the modular cables for everything and was a lot neater for cable runs.

I do miss the loud "clicky sound" that used to happen when you turned on the system or shut it down. That sound felt reassuring.

However the case I am using now annoys me. Thermaltake Level 10 GT case but the back panel was a real PITA to get on as all the cables go around the back. The space should have been a little deeper IMHO

Placed in a ventilated closet, side panels off, with USB/HDMI/Sound connections run through the wall.

Optimum cooling, no audible noise, zero desk footprint....except that I currently have the aforementioned Trash-80 as a monitor stand/nostalgia enhancer.
