Horizon's Time

Horizon's Time: 2263-Fleas! My entry for the contest!

Word count:3549
NOTE: Friendship is love too. IMO

Morning reports had already been filed, and now Captain Christopher Richard Pike and Lieutenant Commander Annette Li Higarashi were eating breakfast together. The former had his usual bacon, eggs, and toast and the latter had her usual oatmeal.

“Do you know anything about the planet?” Higarashi asked during a pause.

Pike nodded his negatively as he finished his mouthful, “No idea. Spock says Ceti Alpha VI is barely habitable, no living creatures reported, but the planet is loaded with dilithium.”

“So we’re playing errand boys for the Federation?” she smirked.

“You are certainly not a boy,” he said before he thought, then turned away from her.

She smiled brightly at him, “I didn’t think you noticed.”

He shrugged and started eating. He distracted himself by staring at the closed door.

“What, no comment?” she teased, then started eating again.

Pike flushed a deep crimson, then changed the subject. “Spock says we can go down there without protective gear, but suggests Vulcan sand suits and goggles.”

“How are the winds?” she asked, noting his seriousness.

“Not too bad,” he laughed at some private joke. “Sixty mile an hour gusts.”

She nodded affirmatively as she continued to eat. After she had swallowed, she asked, “How long before we arrive?”

“Tomorrow, late in the afternoon according to Spock,” he informed her. “I’m going to take you and another engineer and that new security officer. What’s his name again?”

“Marco Palmer?” she asked.

Pike nodded affirmatively at Higarashi, “Yeah him. I was thinking isn’t it Chambers’ turn to go planet side?”

“Either her or Romano,” Higarashi informed him. As the captain’s assistant, a title Pike himself had given her, she was knowledgeable about the entire crew and their rotations to planet side missions.

“Which one is at the top?” he requested.

“Jessica is. Chambers I mean sir,” she replied.

He brought his back to Higarashi, “You know Lieutenant Chambers?”

“Jess and I have known each other since her posting, from what I know about her she’s a very qualified engineer,” she replied. “I’m off to the bridge, that is, if you are done.”

“I’ll be up in a few,” he replied.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The bridge was silent, almost eerily so. The only sound was the functions of the ship itself.

“Estimated time of arrival?” Captain Christopher Pike asked his navigator breaking the silence.

Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi turned to face him after checking her board, “On schedule sir. Thirty-one point six hours until arrival.”

“Thank you Lieutenant Commander,” Higarashi turned back to the navigation board when Pike dismissed her. “Helm?”

Number One, in contrast, never looked away from her board as she replied, “Slight difficulties sir.”

“Spock,” Pike called tossing a glance Spock’s way without turning his chair.

Spock faced Pike from the science station as he informed his captain, “Just some space debris sir, nothing damaging. Navigational deflector still at peak performance.”

Pike turned his focus back to the screen, “Number One, you have the conn.” He stood behind Higarashi, “Will you accompany me?”

“Of course sir,” she left the navigation controls in the hands of Jose Tyler.

The two met in the turbolift. The doors closed in front of them, leaving them in privacy.

“You’re acting like a cadet,” he teased her.

She looked over at him. They were exactly the same height. “What do you mean sir?” she asked

“You turned to look at me when you reported, you usually don’t. A glimpse of recognition is usually all you do, but you turned to look at me. You’re well on your way to Commander, I don’t know why you acted so green,” Pike said, slightly irritated.

She looked away as she said, “You could’ve said something before.”

Pike nodded affirmatively, then grabbed Higarashi’s arm. “Look at me,” he pleaded.

She looked up, “Yes?” she said quietly.

“Please don’t be angry at me. I don’t understand women well do I?” he said.

Higarashi snorted a laugh as the turbolift doors opened and they continued to his private galley. “It’s not you, Chris!”

He smiled, it had been a few days since she had called him anything but ‘sir.’ As they went into the galley and the doors closed behind him, he turned and said, “Okay what’s going on?”

Higarashi smiled brightly, “You understand women just fine,” she laughed. “It’s easy to understand to opposite sex when it comes to friendship.”

Pike shook his head negatively, “When you’re telepathic, you can read anyone.”

She rolled her eyes, “It’s not telepathy, Chris. It’s understanding what a person is like. You know I’ve been upset lately and acting unsure. You may have said it a bit insensitively, but you know me.”

Pike joined her bright grin as he received his chicken thigh and mashed potatoes with corn. She leaned back so the chef could set down her salad.

“If I know you so well, why do I keep hurting your feelings?” he asked after the chef had left.

She waved a hand at him and replied, “You don’t. I believe that friends truly understand what the other is like. I know you’re just as straight forward as I am, a bit more biting where as I am gentle, but you know when to act.”

He bit into his chicken, chewed, and swallowed his bite before saying, “And I know something else, you’re avoiding my question. What’s wrong?”

She bit her lip as she told him, “It’s rather personal.”

“I thought you said I was your friend?” Pike countered tactfully.

Higarashi gathered strength from his ice blue eyes, as she replied, “Montie has a new girlfriend. He didn’t tell me either, I had to find out from Captain Galloway.”

“I’m truly sorry, Annette. I know how much he meant to you,” Pike put down his chicken thigh, wiped his hands and placed his strong hand on hers.

“You know today’s our son’s seventh birthday. Montie still doesn’t know about him,” she said sadly, then pulled her hand away from Pike’s and picked at her salad.

“I wish there were something I could do,” he said wistfully.

“I’ll be all right,” she smiled again.

After her shift was over, Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi went to bed, she planned on getting up very early to work out for a while.

She dreamed . . .

“Marco!” she screamed in fear and warning. The creature was getting closer. She didn’t know what it was, but she was certain it wanted them all dead.

Pike stood beside her waving a piece of broken of rock in his hand. He stabbed and swatted at the creature as if he had a club.

“Chris!” she screamed. The creature swung at him.

Captain Christopher Pike had heard her call to him through his dream. He got out of bed, put on a shirt and his slippers, and ran out into the hall. He went next door to Higarashi’s quarters and overrode the lock. He rushed to her side as she stirred and sweated profusely in her bed. She called to him again, not with her voice, but with her mind.

The creature struck Pike across his chest, “No Chris!” she shrieked.

Pike patted Higarashi’s cheek, “Come on. Wake up Annette,” he pleaded.

“Chris!” she screamed again as she awoke.

“I’m here Annette. Did you have a predicting dream?” he inquired gently.

She nodded affirmatively. “About Ceti Alpha VI,” she said slowly, “Something’s going to attack us there.”

“We’ll be ready for it,” Pike promised, “With words to stop them, or phasers to protect ourselves if necessary.”

She shook her head negatively and placed both hands on his shoulders, “What if neither work?”

He wrapped his arms around her waist as she pulled him close to her chest. “We’ll find a way,” he promised.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

At 0100, Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi awoke as she had planned, and dressed in her work out gear. After four hours of sleep, a full Rhaandarite rest period, she was ready for the day. By 0130, she was in the gym punching away at a punching bag. The gym was empty except for her. She kicked the bag, then cleanly dove away from it. She was ready to punch it again when she saw a hand grab a hold of the bag and stop it.

Lieutenant Spock came around to the other side and stood between her and the bag.

“That’s a good way to get hurt, Spock,” she commented drily.

He nodded affirmatively. “I heard Mister Scott has moved on,” he stated flatly.

“So?” she said.

“Indeed,” Spock raised an eyebrow, “Have you ever considered returning to an old friend? One who thought you were his imsad?” he asked.

Higarashi grabbed a towel from the dispenser and wiped her face as she thought a moment. “Are you asking me out Spock?”

“It would appear so,” he replied.

“But what about T’Pring?” she replied.

Spock shook his head sadly, “She has never meant as much to me as you do.”

Higarashi cocked her head in confusion, “I heard about T’Pris.”

Spock again nodded sadly, “As I am sure T’Pring has.”

“What are you getting at Spock?” she finally asked.

“Ah, the direct approach,” he replied.

She wandered over to a bench and sat down heavily, “Spock, I have too much to do today, and playing cat and mouse with you is not one of those things.”

“I am offering myself to you, as I did when I was merely six,” he replied.

“Spock . . . ” she began, but he stopped her with a gentle finger against her lips.

Before she could stop herself, her hand found his katra points and began testing his mental stability. He had been sleeping right. There was absolutely nothing wrong with him. His hands found there way to her katra points and joined their minds . . .

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Captain, we will be arriving at Ceti Alpha VI in five minutes,” Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi informed Captain Christopher Pike.

Pike glanced up from the report Lieutenant Spock had brought him and looked up at the brown planet spinning before them. “Once we arrive at station keeping, join us in the transporter room.” Pike finished reading his report, then he called Lieutenants Chambers and Palmer to the transporter room.

Five minutes later they entered standard orbit and Number One ordered station keeping and dismissed Higarashi to join Pike.

Higarashi rushed to the lift.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

After Captain Christopher Pike, Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi, and Lieutenants Marco Palmer and Jessica Chambers were suited up and had their goggles on, they got onto the transporter pads and Pike ordered them to be beamed down.

The first thought that struck Higarashi was: This planet makes Vulcan look like a pleasure planet. One could barely see a foot in front of them. As the dust swirled around the landing party, Lieutenant Chambers took tricorder reading to find the dilithium deposits. Pike and Higarashi led the others.

Higarashi pointed ahead at some black shapes in the distance, “They seem to be moving,” she stated.

“It could just be an illusion from the sand. Open your tricorder just in case,” Pike replied.

Higarashi did as she was instructed. “The tricorder indicates those creatures are alive sir,” she reported.

Pike shook his head incredulously, “I wonder if they are sentient.”

“I sense nothing, but malevolence,” Higarashi replied.

“Are you sure?” Pike replied. She shot him a look that, even though the goggles, said he knew better than to ask her that at all.

As the landing party continued toward the creatures, it was more and more obvious that the creatures were, in fact, mobile. They must’ve spotted the landing party, because their lazy shuffle soon became a direct charge at them. Palmer raised his phaser and fired at them with no avail. The other three also raised their phasers, also to no avail.

“Fall back!” Pike shouted. The two lieutenants rushed forward to protect their Captain and Lieutenant Commander, but their courage was rewarded with a swift death by devouring.

Pike and Higarashi finally made some semblance of what the creatures could be: they were brown and hard shelled insectoids and they could only be described as giant fleas.

Pike started to trip over a jutting piece of rock, Higarashi caught him. He grabbed the piece of rock and yanked it free, he began stabbing and swinging at the creature. Just like in my dream, Higarashi realized in horror. The creature raised its front legs and swiped at Pike. Just in time Higarashi slammed him to the ground, the legs missed and struck right where he had been standing.

She tugged Pike up and ran back the way they came.

“Where are we going?” he said in confusion.

“There’s a cave near the beam in point. Hopefully, we can make it there and hide until the Fleas leave,” she replied urgently.

They were fortunate. Higarashi’s quick thinking led them to the cave and relative safety. Once inside the cave, they looked around for anything they could use to block the entryway. They found nothing, so they huddled up as deep in the cave as they dared. The Fleas continued to swipe at them from outside.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

After several hours, it seemed the creatures had given up, so Captain Christopher Pike bravely stepped out of the cave to contact the Enterprise. From atop the cave, a Flea lept down on Pike and began biting at his neck. Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi took her jack knife out of her boot and stabbed the creatures leg. The leg shot a noxious form of blood into her face. She screamed as the fluid burned away her goggles. The knife skittered toward Pike, who had managed to roll onto his back and he thrust the knife into the Fleas soft skin of its stomach, again the creature spewed toxic blood, burning away parts of his sand suit.

Higarashi grabbed Pike’s leg and tried to drag him back into the cave as the Flea recoiled in pain. He used his arms to help her pull him inside the cave.

They immediately began checking each other over for signs of injury. Some of Higarashi’s hair had melted into her face and neck, as it had come loose during the struggle.

“Hold still, this is going to hurt, but I can’t let that hair stay inside your burn,” Pike cautioned as he cut the section of hair, then pulled it out of the burn. Higarashi ground her teeth together as he pulled the hair out.

“You’re going to have to take off that sand suit,” she pointed at his bare torso as it bubbled from the Flea’s blood.

He tugged it off and wiped the fluid off as well as he could. Higarashi shrugged off her suit as well and offered it to him. “You’ll need it,” he refused.

She pointed to his nonexistent shirt, “The sand will infect that wound.”

He reluctantly took her suit, leaving her unprotected from the sand. The wind began to pick up. “One of Spock’s ‘tolerable’ sixty mile an hour winds,” Pike complained. He protected Higarashi as best he could from the sand that gusted into the cave opening.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Captain Christopher Pike opened a tricorder and began reporting: “Captain’s log supplemental. I fear for Lieutenant Commander Higarashi’s life. The acid blood of the flea-like creature burned her hair into her flesh. I removed the hair, but it isn’t healing properly. With our medical kit inside one of the creature’s bellies, I am unable to heal her. She has developed a temperature and is inconsolable.” He paused as she called again for Montgomery Scott. “She continues to call for her ex-husband. I just wish there was something I could do.

“I commend Lieutenants Jessica Chamber and Marco Palmer, their sacrifice was gallant. Without them, I doubt Higarashi and I could’ve made it to this cave we now find ourselves trapped in. All we can do now is wait for the Enterprise to send help. I hope they don’t take too long, Higarashi doesn’t have much time left. I also commend her for her quick thinking, if not for my foolish attempt to contact the ship, neither of us would be as injured as we are. When we make it out of here, I recommend Annette Higarashi be promoted to Commander,” he finished his report and closed the tricorder.

Pike stood and went too Higarashi’s side.

“Chris,” she whispered hoarsely.

He put a hand to the undamaged side of her face, “Yes, Annette, it’s me.”

“I’m sorry,” she said and began to weep.

“Hang on for me. I’m going deeper into the cave to see if I can find some water,” he told her.

“So cold,” she complained. He touched her forehead and found it burning hot. He took off the sand suit and laid it like a blanket on Higarashi.

He tried his best to soothe her, “We’re going to make it, just hang on, okay?”

“Aye,” she replied.

Pike ventured deeper into the cave, carefully making his way to find a possible source of water.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Anything yet Garrison?” Commander Number One asked.

Lieutenant Mitchell Garrison shook his head negatively, “No, Commander,” he replied.

“Lieutenant Spock, call the department heads, I want a meeting to check our alternatives,” Number One commanded.

“Aye sir,” Spock replied. In his mind Spock feared the worst, after T’Pris’ murder, he had tried to shield himself from romantic attachments. He bottled up his feelings into that little spot he called his ‘Vulcan hole’ and did as he was told.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

All department heads met in the briefing room, Doctor Mark Piper was last to arrive.

“To break this down as simply as I can: Captain Pike, Lieutenant Commander Higarashi and Lieutenants Palmer and Chambers beamed down to Ceti Alpha VI, a planet rich in dilithium ores. We have been out of contact for six point three hours now. How do you propose we find them?” Number One asked.

Commander Norman West raised his hand, Number One nodded in his direction, “We could send a low-level disbursement ray to render whatever has captured them harmless.”

“Who said they were attacked?” Doctor Piper countered, “They may just be injured, you know, fell into a hole or something and are too injured to contact us.”

“They may be just fine,” Chief Moves-With-Burning-Grace, the chief engineer, spoke up. His deep set Native features full of concern, “They may be mining the ore just fine. Everyone knows dilithium distorts a communications signal.”

“True,” Number One conceded. “But Captain Pike was supposed to report after one hour down there.”

“He’s a stickler for procedure,” Lieutenant Mitchell Garrison added.

Doctor Piper leaned forward and asked, “Is that why you think there’s a problem Number One?”

Number One nodded affirmatively, “It’s just too unlike Captain Pike. I’ve served with him since he took over for Captain April, that’s thirteen years now, I’ve gotten used to his command style.”

“True, I’ve been his friend since the Academy days. He never strays from the norm unless he’s forced to. That’s why I believe he’s been attacked,” West put in.

“Send a security team right away, also set up the disbursement ray,” Number One ordered.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Captain Christopher Pike returned with a bowl of water, he had fashioned the bowl from naturally occurring rock and carving it a bit with Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi’s jack knife.

“Chris?” she asked.

He set the bowl down next to her. “Yes it’s me,” he soothed. “How do you feel Annette?”

“Worse than the day after one of Montie’s ceildhs,” she tried to laugh, but had a coughing fit instead.

Pike tried to smile at her joke, “His parties did get a bit wild.”

He pulled a strip of cloth from his pant leg off and used it as a washcloth to wet Higarashi’s forehead. Then he sat her up a little better and tipped the bowl to her mouth so she could get a drink.

“Am I going to die?” she asked him after she had gotten her proper sips of water.

He laid her back down gently. “Of course not,” Pike replied. “I command you to stay strong for me.”

“Even with my Rhaandarite attributes, I can’t fight off this infection,” she told him.

After she had fallen back to sleep, Pike got out the tricorder and began recording again: “Captain’s log supplemental. I think Annette is going to die. I can’t do anything for her, if Doctor Piper doesn’t I arrive soon, I may be the only survivor. I doubt that as well, my stomach is still burning. I tried washing it off while I was near the pool in the back of the cave. All I could get off was layers of skin.

“Annette says her Rhaandarite half can’t stave off the infection. I fear for both of our lives,” he closed the tricorder.

A flash of light from the front of the cave caught Pike’s eye. He ventured a bit further toward the entrance of the cave, the Flea guards were now on their backs kicking their legs fruitlessly in the air. Pike ran out of the cave and whipped open his communicator.

“Pike to Enterprise,” he commanded.

After a moment Number One replied, “Captain, this is Number One, go ahead.”

“Higarashi and I have been injured. Chambers and Palmer are dead. Please send Doctor Piper immediately,” he replied in a rush.

Moments later Doctor Mark Piper and Commander Norman West appeared near Pike.

“Come on!” he called urgently. He led them into the cave to Higarashi.

As Piper bent over her, Pike told West what had happened. Pike joined Piper, “Is she going to be okay?”

“Fortunately, we got to get her aboard the ship as soon as possible, but I think she’ll pull through,” Piper replied.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

After an hour of work getting Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi stabilized, Piper turned to Lieutenant Spock, whom had not left Higarashi’s since she had arrived, “She’s going to make it Spock. Let her rest a while, though. She’s exhausted.”

“Thank you Doctor,” Spock replied. He walked over to Higarashi’s side and took one of her hands into both of his.

“Spock,” she whispered and her eyes fluttered open.

“It is I,” he replied.

She nodded affirmatively, then went back to sleep.

When she awoke again, Spock was still holding her hand, “Thanks for staying with me Spock.”

“It was only logical,” he replied.

She closed her eyes a moment, then opened them, “It was not, but I won’t tell anyone.”

“I cannot continue seeing you. I almost lost my control while you were gone, I cannot risk my position like that again,” he said.

“I understand,” she whispered. “Where’s Captain Pike?”

Pike entered right at that moment, Spock let go of her hand and left.

“I’m here Annette. You gave me an awful scare,” he said.

She smiled weakly, “You can’t get rid of me that easily.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

There was a service conducted for Chambers and Palmer. Afterward Captain Christopher Pike decided something less depressing was in order. Lieutenant Commander Annette Higarashi stood on a small stage next to him now. Everyone was dressed in their dress uniforms.

Pike pinned a medal to her chest, “For bravery in the face of death I give you this medal of courage. I also promote you to the rank of Commander, effective immediately.”

Higarashi smiled humbly, “Thank you Captain.”

They stepped down together and joined the crowd, everyone shook her hand and congratulated her.

Piper brought her a Scotch, “I’d like to make a toast,” she said loudly. The crowd became quiet, “Doctor Piper informed me that, if not for the captain’s quick thinking, I may have died. I’d like to propose a toast to his grand abilities as a captain. To Captain Pike!”

“To Captain Pike!” the group toasted.

Just finished Both Sides of the Coin.

Wow, seems like Higarashi is a Renaissance woman, she's a better engineer than Scotty and a better helmsman that Sulu?

But in the end...I'm not sure I would be as forgiving as Pike. The other one was a Pike too, but still...he was another man. Actually, I am sure: I wouldn't be so forgiving at all

The AU (2009) Higarashi is meant to be a stronger version of the regular timeline Higarashi. The AU Higarashi has been in Fleet longer than Sulu and Scotty, as you see she has attained the rank of Commander.

I'd like to think the in the future parallel universe affairs are better accepted ;)
