This is a wild guess, but I'd try to make the thing out of clear plastic, paint some areas and put an LED right in the rear stub.

"battle damage"? This is what's called an unfinished model in-progress. There are patches of primer, exposed wire and plastic. This is not in it's final form.

Ah, I wasn't referring to the exposed wires, but to the primer. It seriously looks good as a weathering effect.

There's a single 2mm lighthouse LED mounted in the center of the clear frosted dish. A length of fiber optic extends that light to the tip of the spire.
