Believe it or not, Shatner pressed for their to be a fistfight between Kirk and Khan in the film and, to this day, seems to think the movie would have been better with it. He finally got his wish, at least, in TSFS with Kruge. Personally, I think it's kind of unique and good for the film that the protagonist and the antagonist never actually meet.

Made more sense and natural flow for the story narrative. Esp. with the rewrites TWOK had, to now do another to contrive Kirk and far-stronger Khan would require an even bigger feat to feel authentic and what would replace the metal cylinder Kirk used in "Space Seed" as a last-minute bit of inspiration (which worked, even if we never saw that row of cylinders before or since, but maybe it's a new area of Engineering, but either way I digress)? TWOK, as filmed, really got it right.

Yeah, it becomes Kirk (and Spock) defeating Khan with his experience, which counterpoints the theme of ageing.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how or where to put a physical fight between Kirk and Khan in the film, unless Kirk's taunt of Khan were to prompt Khan to beam down to the Genesis Cave to take the Genesis device personally. That would work, I guess, but it's not an improvement over what we see in the film as it stands.

If Khan beams down in force, confronts Kirk and party, and physically takes the Genesis device, why would Khan leave them alive? I can't think of a good reason for letting Kirk live in this scenario.

Same reason he does in the actual film, to leave Kirk to rot, knowing he's lost, buried alive...

insurrection felt like a good tng episode and thats why no matter what i will not hate this movie. because i like this sort of stuff and i like the plot.

It also, with all due respect to the folks involved, has a pretty crappy rendition of the Jerry Goldsmith theme. Voyager's theme was much better done. But the TMP theme was originally written for a 100+ piece orchestra. The TNG version sounds like they got about 10 guys in a room to do their recording of it.
