Why were there so few aliens in Starfleet? It just didn't quite mesh with the concept of a united federations of planets, which JJ was quite ready to remind us of with Pike's little bar comment.

Would ahve liked to have seen more.

There is a budgetary tradeoff between doing unusual aliens and their numbers and screen time. And maybe most cultures, like Vulcan, have career paths that are more kindly looked upon. Starfleet could be human vocation of choice because of its headquarters' location.

Was it also Mr. Abrams' fault that we've never seen that many aliens in a given episode or movie in the past?

Remember, this took place relatively early in starfleet history, before a lot of diversification could take place.

The only movie with a lot of aliens that I can remember is TVH. And it spent most of the movie in the 20th century.

The Arena
Devil in the Dark
The Savage Curtain
The Tholian Web

If the original series can at least bring us a humanoid lizard onto the screen and make it look cool, I'd think they'd be able to do something more convincing on film that has a 100 million dollar plus budget.

If Abrams had put more aliens, then people would be accusing him of making a "star wars" wanabe.

There were plently of aliens, but they were always at the background.

Um, there are whole books written about how many alien worlds there are in Starfleet. Where do you get the suggestion that there were never many aliens in Trek?

I'm frankly surprised we saw as many aliens as we did. Outside of the Vulcans and Romulans, JJ really didn't have to show any...general audiences wouldn't have noticed or cared.

TMP had quite a few in the crew assembly scene, along with Klingons.

TWOK had virtually none, I accept that.

SFS had a small number.

TVH had plenty as you point out.

TFF had a few on Nimbus III, such as cat lady and some of the tramps.

TUC had quite a few on Khitomer.

Generations didn't have many.

FC had quite a few, but most had been assimilated into Borg.

INS & NEM - I don't recall either having any starfleet aliens or others beyond Roms or Son'a/Baku. But then they're shit anyway.

So a mixed bag I guess.

You say that, but the general audience cares more about the "wow" factor than the story so I reckon a few cool looking aliens would have been right up their street.

Let's also remember that "Star Trek" is about OUR adventure in space. Now if were made on another planet...
Kudos to Abrams for giving us a more diverse group of aliens that are more divergent from human beings. I appreciated the excellent work especially on the doctor at Kirk's birth. It was just enough to make you believe that she might actually exist.

her eyes creeped me out.

Perhaps its because most of the ships in the fleet are built for species that live in an M class environment? Species that live in different types of atmosphere might have their own seperate starfleet vessels especially built for them.

Of course. Don't you see? Everything is his fault. Damn you JJ, damn you to hell!
