Homosapiens only club

One might look at that awards ceremony- Spock
destroyed the drill over Earth, and ultimately destroyed Narada with the red matter he was carrying, and probably fully expecting to die in the process to save Earth
but no notice seemed to be given of that fact, no commendations, no nothing. Now I ask you, does Star Fleet seem a little one-sided?????

Why were there so few aliens in Starfleet? It just didn't quite mesh with the concept of a united federations of planets, which JJ was quite ready to remind us of with Pike's little bar comment.

Would ahve liked to have seen more.

Well, since Spock was the first Vulcan to enlist in Starfleet, and humans have had contact first and foremost with Vulcans since Cochran, it stands to reason that other alien species would still be fairly underrepresented in Starfleet during the early TOS time period. Most of the Enterprise crew looked human to me in TOS.

her eyes creeped me out.

I must admit they were shocking but also fascinating ;)

But I think McCoy said something about this: its something future generations will just have to get used to and no doubt they will. (can't remember the episode he said it but i can remember Spock in 'Metamophosis': [what a] totally perochial attitude ;)) about Zephran Cochran's attitude to his alien.

I guess its part of star trek vision that people and beings are seen for more than their looks.

There were plenty of aliens, both in the academy assembly and onboard the Enterprise. Plus, that funky Arex-lookalike on the Kelvin.

While you're at it, you might point the finger at the TV shows - they usually didn't have alien background extras.

I thought Starfleet and the Enterprise both had more aliens than anything we've seen from Trek before.

I thought the aliens were tastefully used. They were there. It was very matter-of-fact. I didn't notice a paucity of aliens. I had hoped for a couple andorians, though.

Yeah, the in-universe reason usually given is that species with similar life support requirements travel together.

Because let's face it, the United Federation of Planets is the Terran Empire with a Happy Face, a hand buzzer, and a Whoopie Cushion.

It's a Protection Racket, but a nice Protection Racket. Aliens must figure that if the Terrans want to spend so much latinum on Starfleet, will, that's Humans for you.

Was it also Mr. Abrams' fault that we've never seen that many aliens in a given episode or movie in the past?
The Arena
Devil in the Dark
The Savage Curtain
The Tholian Web

If the original series can at least bring us a humanoid lizard onto the screen and make it look cool, I'd think they'd be able to do something more convincing on film that has a 100 million dollar plus budget.
One in each episode for the most part ( not counting Spock) Most were Aliens of the Week. The movie did better than that.

You should have gone with Journey To Babel, Whom Gods Destroy or Gamesters of Triskelion, because they show multiple aliens. Savage Curtain worked though.

I'm frankly surprised we saw as many aliens as we did. Outside of the Vulcans and Romulans, JJ really didn't have to show any...general audiences wouldn't have noticed or cared.

I agree with you KiraDax. I too was surprised to see as many aliens as we did...even the ewok

I really wanted to see Andorians. And there needs to be a USS Kumari in the next movie (named for General Shran's old ship).

I love the idea of giving a ship an Andorian name - from what I can recall, the only two ships I've ever seen that didn't have human names were the USS Gorkon and the USS T'Kumbra.

I was a bit disappointed by the absence of Andorians, but I am 99% certain that I did see a Tellarite. Though the pig-faced lil' man is probably dead now :(

Since most the characters we saw were originally cadets in San Francisco, isn't it logical that most of them would be humans? Maybe there are other academies on other planets?

Um, there are whole books written about how many alien worlds there are in Starfleet. Where do you get the suggestion that there were never many aliens in Trek?

Because beyond Spock, TOS rarely showed a non-human member of Starfleet, much less a crewman on the Enterprise?
