Home theatre audio help.

Hi all,

In my 9 years at TrekBBS, I think this is actually my first post in this particular forum. So howdy!

I have a question for you smart people and I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

I have a Sharp LC-40LB700X (which I bought only a few weeks ago), and now a Yamaha YAS-71 sound bar home theatre thing which I bought perhaps two weeks ago.

The TV has a built-in Blu-ray (yay!), so there are no issues there. But I also have a PS3 and an Xbox 360 connected to the TV. The PS3 is connected via HDMI, and the Xbox 360 via component*

Then, I have an optical audio (TOSlink?) cable running from the 'audio out' port of the TV, and into my Yamaha.

So my question is: is there any advantage for me in connecting the PS3 and Xbox 360 directly to the sound system via their own TOSlink cables, or is the way I've got it set up sufficient?

*The model of Xbox 360 I have does not support HDMI output. However, as part of a promotion when I bought the TV I'll soon be receiving a model that DOES, in which case I'll connect it to the TV vida HDMI :)

HDMI transmits digital audio just as TOSlink does... so no need for a separate cable. HDMI is actually a bit better in that just about any digital sound format can pass through HDMI. TOSlink cannot handle Dolby Digital Plus, TrueHD, or DTS HD audio streams.
