Homages You Liked:

There were a lot of happy moments, but I think my favorite was when Old Spock introduces himself to Young Kirk with the "I have been, and always shall be your friend". Which is of course how he said goodbye in the TWOK.

Bonus points for "I Am Spock". Since I believe that was Nimoy's follow-up biography to "I Am Not Spock".

I don't know if it was an homage or not, but when Kirk and Spock are about to beam over to the Narada, and Spock and Uhura decide to have a brief make-out session on the transporter pad- Kirk gives Spock this "what is with YOU look", that I could swear McCoy was aiming at Kirk on Rura Penthe when Martia was kissing him.

Do you think when Kirk said Bones that was a homage to Shatner's Kirk

I don't recall that. I do recall McCoy calling himself Bones, as in, after the divorce, all he had left were his Bones! -- RR

Yeah, Kirk then calls him Bones later in the movie as well. Possibly as early as just before the Kobayashi Maru, definitely the very end when they're all back on the Enterprise.

I don't think it can be called a homage though, since it's fundamental to TOS which is what they are remaking.

"I have been and always shall be your friend."

What really got me about that moment is that from Spock's perspective he hasn't seen Kirk since before the launch of the Enterprise-B 91 years ago! And now here is his friend, his Brother for all intents and purposes at his prime showing up out of nowhere.

"I have been and always shall be your friend."

It's weird. The first time I saw the movie I thought that line was cheesy. The last (third) time I saw it, I actually liked the line and found it appropriate. Dunno why the change of heart

Cheesy!! EEK!

For TOS fans it's holy writ.

Seriously, that scene in TWOK is so emotionally wrenching, so sums up the Kirk/Spock relationship in a single line...to hear an elder Spock say this to young Kirk in NuTrek - what a thrill and benediction.

People:

There are lots of little homages in the film that point to past ST eps and movies that I got a big kick out of.

My favorite have to be:

-Kirk calmly eating an apple as he saves all the ships now that he's reprogrammed the Kobayashi Maru scenario. As you all remember, he's eating an apple in TWOK as he explains how he beat the Kobayashi Maru scenario, and awaits word from Spock they can retrieve them;

-Pike's admiral's uniform, as I recall, has a similar color scheme to Kirk's admiral outfit in TMP; and, of course, he's in a wheelchair, like in The Menagerie; and

-Kirk cavorting with the Orion woman, an homage both to Vina in The Cage and Marta in Whom Gods Destroy.

Any other homages you loved?

Red Ranger

I liked the bar fight. Kind of reminded me of TOS episodes where there almost seemed to be bar fights. Like in the episode "Trouble with Tribbles".
