Homages You Liked:

Red Ranger

Admiral
In Memoriam
People:

There are lots of little homages in the film that point to past ST eps and movies that I got a big kick out of.

My favorite have to be:

-Kirk calmly eating an apple as he saves all the ships now that he's reprogrammed the Kobayashi Maru scenario. As you all remember, he's eating an apple in TWOK as he explains how he beat the Kobayashi Maru scenario, and awaits word from Spock they can retrieve them;

-Pike's admiral's uniform, as I recall, has a similar color scheme to Kirk's admiral outfit in TMP; and, of course, he's in a wheelchair, like in The Menagerie; and

-Kirk cavorting with the Orion woman, an homage both to Vina in The Cage and Marta in Whom Gods Destroy.

Any other homages you loved?

Red Ranger

During the alternate timeline discussion on the bridge, McCoy uses "I'm a doctor, not a physicist!" and Spock responds "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." The two of them together like that was cool, I thought.

I liked the get out of the chair reference to Picard (we learned several times that Picard HATED it when people sat in his chair).

All the little sound effect homages. My non-Trekkie buddies didn't understand why I suddenly had a shit-eating grin on my face.

One I haven't seen mentioned, and only now realized.

After all this time, we got our pre-credit teaser back.

They were good, but would have been better if they'd been used more accurately. I was disappointed when they changed the Enterprise Red Alert klaxon from the original (in the trailer) to just a close "sound alike".

Adding to the list of favs: the tribble.

One I haven't seen that has been overlooked was during the Academy trial scene Spock does the Picard maneuver when Kirk calls him out.

It might not have been a homage though, but I took it that way.

The orbital skydive was a clear tip of the hat to the scene from Generations which was cut. Kirk banging his head on the roof support beam in the shuttle seemed to be a nod to Scotty in TFF. As others have mentioned, the TOS style sounds were very cool. The TOS style communicators used on the Kelvin. The mention of starships Farragut and Hood (and Republic?). Nurse Chapel's offscreen presence.

Karl Urban's homage to McCoy. Choosing to play McCoy that way, he had to walk a fine line between actually being the character himself, and just imitating Kelley being the character. He pulled it off magnificently.

Pine crossing his legs in the captain's chair at the end of the movie. Indeed, he pretty much let himelf be Shatner's Kirk for that entire final shot.

I thought the leg crossing was Shatneresque at first, until I saw Pine do it himself in talk-show interviews. He sits like that in reality.

The redshirt that immediately gets vapourised. The Yesteryear bullying scene. Sulu's fencing expertise. The Centauri slugs vs TWOK's Ceti eels. The streaks of grey in Amanda's hair.

BTW -

Watch TWOK - Spock does this when he gets up from the floor in the reactor chamber.

that is what it reminded me of..

did anyone else notice that the red alert during the trying to escape the singularity scene sounded more like the tos one then it did during the battle station one prior to arriving at vulcan.

kirk's hitting is head on the beam reminded of how many times it looked like archer would smack his head on the low beam in his ready room.

scotty running experiments on animals and the transporter from enemy within.
and that was a dog looking animal.
did wish we saw porthos showing up on the platform like suppsoedly in the
novlization.

we got to see some things that previously had only been described like spock turing down the science academy.
it makes more sense that sarek got so hacked off considering he was present.

chekov not only being a navigator but a bit of a science geek considering chekov prime often took over spock's science station.

admiral komak

the shuttles on the kelvin, the hypo that bones keeps inject kirk, the ladder in the corridor. The uniforms the end music, computer voice, spock and bones little chat .

Getting to finally see the scene where Spock chooses Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy.

The theme music at the end (ruined because I was with a buncha non-Trekkies who just wanted to leave when the movie was over! next time I'm going by myself!!! :klingon:)

And the Cardassian Sunset, which establishes that the Cardies were known in the 23rd C. :bolian: I just hope nobody orders a Borg on the Beach.
