Holy Sh*t

I don't think anyone is saying the older plane would be as good as the F-22, just that the F-22 is massive overkill in the current climate. It's like getting a P-90 for disciplining a kindergarden class. At this point, no one is threatening enough to justify needing something as massively cool as the F-22. You yourself made the same point when you bet that a U.S. could defeat an enemy pilot even in an equivalent or lesser plane.

While that fact may be true, but through-out history, there's always someone developing ways to counter current military technology, so the trick is to remain a step or two ahead of your potential enemies.

The said, the F-22's most important spec is its stealthiness. We've never really had a stealthy air-superiority fighter. Now we do. The F-117 stealth fighter wasn't really a fighter. It was a first-strike bomber, really. But now with the F-22 is just the continuation and replacement of the F-15. Just as the F-35 will be replacement for the F-14, F-16, and perhaps even the F-18.
