A person has an item in their left hand. They open the fridge with their right hand. They reach into the fridge, PUT THE ITEM DOWN IN THE FRIDGE, and pick up the desired food--leaving the original item in its place. (Change the hands used as applicable.)

Presumably, your other hand is holding the fridge door open. Maybe you use your foot for that, or you elbow, but not everyone does.
And some people carry remotes around a lot. Especially if the kitchen is adjoining the TV room, as it is in many small apartments.
