Hollywood Reporter - Anton Yelchin in talks to play Checkov?

Re: Checkov has been cast???? From Hollywood Report

Ooooooooooh a retcon!

Cool news anyway. Could even retcon the Khan encounter ;)

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

This is great news!

I read a few Trek books years ago that explained away that Chekov was stationed on the lower decks at first.

Well we have no way of knowing if they will do that. To be consistent with TOS.

Or if they are just rewriting things from TOS. As some of the above seem to fear.

His simple appearance in the film does not tell us much of anything. In terms of the actual context of his role.

My bigger fear, much more than changing "CANON", is that this film is over crowed. In terms of number of cast members. But also in terms of prequel-esque setups.

Yeah, that's also my fear; that there'll be too many coincidental meetings before the assignment to Enterprise (I have the same problem with Smallville).

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

Anton Yelchin's a fine young actor, and in heavy demand. Given how limited Chekov's appearances have been in the past, I'm kind of surprised that they would be able to land such an on-his-way-up actor; must be a reasonable-sized part...

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

Wow, they are going quite young aren't they?

At any rate, I thought he was pretty good on Huff. It's really the only role I've seen him play though.

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

He had a role in the miniseries "Taken". Playing a half Human/half Alien hybrid. He was very young then.

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

Seeing as that CHekov was supposed to be very young in TOS, Yelchin's age would fit. And indeed, he gives the Chekov vibe. Loved him on "Huff". He played a similar smartass there. :)

But.... What's "The Federation Captain" supposed to mean??

I think that's talking about Kirk.

-edit- Just reread the article and it's definitely not refering to Kirk. I'm guessing now that it means Pike.

This Yelchin kid gave me the creeps on the only episode of Criminal Minds I've been able to sit through. Something weird about the way he looked in the episode.

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

Someone said something about not wanting many "prequelly" setups - Well... I'm of the opinion this movie isn't a prequel - yes it takes place before "current trek", before TMP and following movies. But its not a prequel in the manner that the Star Wars films had prequels.

In truth...

...This is going to be an "Unseen TOS episode", maybe even couple "unseen epds" depending how you cut it together... (something that I mentioned in passing a few days back) and I applaud Abrams for having the balls to dare it!

My gut just tells me this, the casting sheet or at least the casting of Checkov tells us this. (and did we really think they'd make TOS movie without all the characters?)

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

So the whole film will basically explain how Chekov could've met Khan huh?

Since so many of the old gang being recast and put aboard the Enterprise from the word go, perhaps they'll be no alternative but to decanonise Where No Man Has Gone Before and that sense of it's characters feeling each other out... I always bought into the realism of a crew meeting each other at different stages of the five year mission. Promotions, demotions, transfers and changes in department heads.

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

From the article:
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the story line is believed to chronicle the early days of the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy.

:wtf: No! Not this again.

I don't care as long as he says "Nuclear Wessels".

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

Yelchin will join Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock. Casting is under way in New York and London for Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's villain and the Federation captain.
Pike seems likely, but I'm not sure who they mean by "captain".

Checkov was notably absent from the leaked memo to talent agencies.

Conflicting reports are fun.

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

Well it makes sense that Chekov would be missing from the casting call sheet. They wouldn't be searching for a Chekov if they had already found one.

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

It seems like many of the people on this thread agree that Chekov could have been there in season one, but to those who don't...

...Chekov being on the ship in season one most certainly IS canon -- That one line spoken by Khan in TWoK made it canon. Nothing else ever said on screen contradicts Khan's line.

Since maybe only 100 to 200 (a guess) TOS crewmembers were ever seen on screen, does that mean that canon should dictate that the Enterprise had a crew of 100-200 people? Of course not -- there were many unseen crewmembers.

Everytime we see a crewmwmber we never saw before, do we assume that they just came on board that day? No, we assume that they have been there a while, but they were just "unseen".

The same thing could easily be true for Chekov in the first season.

About the "Federation Captain" thing...

This article had its share of mistakes. Maybe when they wrote "Federation Captain" they meant "Fleet Captain", which would possibly refer to Chris Pike.

It's obvious that this article was written by a non-fan.

Re: Hollywood Report - Checkov has been cast????

Maybe the "Federation Captain" is the villain!?!1
