The Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers has claimed that film production in Hollywood is now "virtually shut down" with TV production "seriously threatened" after its contract with the Screen Actors Guild expired without renewal at 12:01am Pacific Time today.
The AMPTP presented the SAG with a "final offer" that it described as similar to other agreements it has already reached with directors, writers and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, a smaller rival to the SAG. The two actors' unions have been embroiled in a scuffle over the agreement reached between AMPTP and AFTRA, with the SAG urging members who belong to both unions to vote against the agreement on the grounds that it does not offer sufficient residual percentages on DVD and new media sales.
