Hollywood 'now in de facto strike'

That is according to the AMPTP.

From Digital Spy

The Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers has claimed that film production in Hollywood is now "virtually shut down" with TV production "seriously threatened" after its contract with the Screen Actors Guild expired without renewal at 12:01am Pacific Time today.

The AMPTP presented the SAG with a "final offer" that it described as similar to other agreements it has already reached with directors, writers and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, a smaller rival to the SAG. The two actors' unions have been embroiled in a scuffle over the agreement reached between AMPTP and AFTRA, with the SAG urging members who belong to both unions to vote against the agreement on the grounds that it does not offer sufficient residual percentages on DVD and new media sales.

Great. I can't find a reason to support actors getting paid more. I know we aren't just talking about the big name multi-million dollar marquee names. I'm sure the actors doing Burger King commercials want more, however I'd also wager they make pretty good money doing what they do.

Great. Just great. There goes the Fall TV season too.

Yeah when prices on everything are rising so fast you can't afford to do anything, you can always fall back on watching TV. And now that might be messed up.

I guess there are always DVDs. :(

I'm not so sure. The union heads of SAG will have a harder time getting a 75 percent vote for a strike authorization. There are actors who've gone on the record as saying they want AFTRA to ratify their contract and that they don't want a strike. Hopefully these actors will tip the scales--hopefully.

Its usually the most vocal actors in favour of the strike are the ones that get paid the most anyway.

Consider the source, folks. This statement is from AMPTP. There's no strike until SAG says there's a strike, because they're the union. This sounds like just another sleazy tactic from AMPTP, trying to pre-emptively turn public opinion against SAG by making them seem like the unreasonable ones who want a strike. Trust nothing until you hear both sides.

Well don't just go by the AMPTP's press releases, they have an agenda to push. Check out Nikki Finke's blog - she was pretty accurate about the WGA saga after all.

Deadline Hollywood Daily.

I wouldn't get too excited about this 11th hour "Last Best Offer" by the Big Media cartel before SAG's contract expires at 12:01 AM on July 1st. Because WGA exec director Dave Young had already informed his SAG counterpart Doug Allen that the AMPTP offered the writers "at least 10 last best offers" before a contract settlement was finally reached. SAG has said it will keep bargaining and has no plans for a strike. It said the AMPTP offer looks like the AFTRA contract but the screen actors agreed to examine it before the next negotiating session on Wednesday. So there will be no last-minute theatrics tonight by either side, which means Hollywood can get a good's night sleep. (Although the British press headlines for Tuesday are blaring "actors strike" as if a labor action is as imminent as, say, tomorrow. Get a clue, people.)

Moving on to this thread...

That is exactly what it is.

That's what I assumed, hence the "According to AMPTP". Especially with the last part in the link I posted being

It has instructed its members to "report to work and to audition for new work... until further notice", and has dismissed suggestions that a strike is now in effect.

But I thought either way it was thread-worthy.

oh god just looking at the Riches wikipedia, I see it had ony 7 of 13 episodes due to the WGA strike, and S3 is up in the air in part due to ratings and a possible SGA strike, reminds me of Dirt, only the Riches is alot better than Dirt

The actors are NOT on strike. For SAG to strike it would need to get 3/4 of its membership to vote for action to strike and there have been no moves made by SAG to even initiate such a process yet.

Everyone needs to just calm down and stop overreacting.

But the sky is falling, TV will die, and movies will never be the same again!

I thought that already had happened with the other strike. Deja Vu!

It did, but it'll be worse if it happens again...

No, not really.

The studio bosses are the bad guys. It's that simple.

You wouldn't need to know jack squat about any of this to be able to guess that it's all about the corporate bastards being bastards.

But I do appreciate the consistency.

And to reiterate: there are plenty of actors, just like writers, who are just trying to make ends meet like anyone else who works for a living. Only a tiny minority spend all their time driving around Hollywood having orgies in stretch limos. And they pay for it by being forced to become Scientologists, so it all works out. :bolian:
