Hobus and the Breen

Ronald Held

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Recently the Breen seem to be the major antagonists of the Pact i. Is this delibrate to take into account the destruction of Romulus/Remus?

Well, the recent Titan novel does have the Breen involved with "antistellar" weapons, which seem to be very similar to what Dr. Soran was using in Generations.

The Gorn and Romulans aren't really against the Federations.
The Kinshaya don't have a big fleet, and I don't know how big the Tzenkethi are.
So I put my money on the Tzenkethi

The Breen do seem to be stepping up as the major antagonist race within the pact.
If the Hobus situation is to come to pass in Treklit, that will remove the Romulans as a major threat(at least temporarily.Who knows how they will react to the loss of their homeworld? It may chasten them but it might also drive them towards more reckless and aggressive action).

The Kinshaya seem half-hearted about the pact and are riven with internal problems.
The Gorn?Who knows.Ditto the Tholians.
The Tzenkethi though are a dangerous element with malicious intent toward the Feds.

Haven't read Fortunes of War yet, but with the Breen struggling to come on top in the Pact for a while now, I wouldn't be surprised by them trying to cripple the Romulan Empire like that...

Another good point(if skirting the rules). Will the Breen finish off any chance of the RSE regaining it's prominence in the Pact after Hobus?

And it will be interesting to see just how much assistance the Romulans can count on from the pact.
Or will it be left to the UFP to pick up the pieces?
I hope not,an embittered Romulan empire makes for more dramatic possibilities.(Does that sound callous?)

I think I feel the same way. We already got to see post-war Cardassia turning a new leaf with the help of the Federation. It would be more interesting to see the opposite happen instead of that all over again.

I definitely see the Federation as the ones most likely to help them out. The Gorn seem to be one of the more decent members of the Pact, so I could maybe see them helping a bit.

I wondered whether this may end up being relevant as well, as the resulting shockwave was referred to as, I believe, a "hyperwarp" shockwave. If Hobus is a sufficiently massive star and is close enough to Romulus that the shockwave from its destruction would be a catastrophe for the Romulan system, that could satisfy the scenario presented in the first Kelvinverse movie and still fit with the novelverse.

Regardless of how it happens, I would assume the Breen will see the destruction of Romulus as creating a power vacuum that they can fill. The Breen very much seem to want to escalate to from a cold war to a proper war with the Khitomer Accords, but the Romulans are currently keeping them in check. If the Star Empire falls into disarray, I would imagine the Breen won't hesitate to seize power within the Typhon Pact.

Except that <spoiler> doesn't explain the whole "red matter" (where do they come up with these things -- it's red; we're not sure what it is; let's call it "red matter") business.

Sorry, I should have qualified that. I meant how it would explain how a supernova shockwave possibly could be a danger to another star system in the first place, not how they could miraculously stop it.

Also the Kinshaya don’t seem to have any borders with the Federation (although the seem to share borders with the Klingons).

Plus the Romulans, ever since the reintegration of the Imperial Romulan Empire, the Romulan Praetor seems to be straddling the line more as a political move, since I get that part of the Romulan people want peace with the Federation and Vulcan, while the other half want war.

These developments-like trans warp drive and the revolutionary beaming tech (seen in nuTrek but introduced from oldSpock’s universe) are never fully developed as much as you might think they should be in the books. The real world implications for their weaponization(and you could include Genesis tech)would quickly turn the Trek universe into a graveyard.
I suspect that red-matter will be left as one of those dead ends.
