Don't think so. Adams' universe is so wacky that when it comes to visual mediums, you need a real human to be baffled at it all.
I think the H2G2 movie is a fine candidate for a fan edit. Trim some of the pacing, remove the Hollywood Arthur/Trillian stuff, don't completely remove the point-of-view gun but don't make it a defining feature of the film either...
Rightly or wrongly, they thought a straightforwardly Adamesque movie wouldn't make enough buck, so they added stuff. Perfect opportunity for a fan edit to give those that already own the dvd a purer cut.

I don't know who I would have had instead. I really liked Mark Wing Davey in the TV series.

Well, I loved Zaphod too in the books, but (IMHO) Zaphod was most clearly supposed to be irritating, obnoxious, and shallow.
Certainly, but I think Mark Wing Davey did a better job at that on a subtler level. It's interesting how different people's views are on things like this. My girlfriend and I who are both big fans of the books adore Rockwell in the movie. I think he gives a wonderfully weird, quirky and funny performance. In the end, you just love to hate the guy, which is pretty spot on for Zaphod in my view.

Zaphod in the movie was a fucking joke.
Marvin, excellent voice casting aside, was a fucking joke.
There are 3 things I like that whole movie:
1. Zooey Deschanel. I mean, yes. She's also the only cast member I prefer to the equivalent in the 80s TV series (which is one of my favourite shows EVER)
2. The point of view gun. Brilliant. Overused and too integral to the plot, but brilliant nonetheless.
3. The bureaucratic rescue sequence. Thought that suited the Zogons wonderfully.
Earth 2 looked damn pretty mind.
Other than that, every single that was also in the TV series was inferior to said series (ESPECIALLY the Guide animations and, as as much as I love Stephen Fry, narration.
Of course, I was half an ass away from leaving the cinema during the dolphin song. It's a good thing the line about the restaurant being at the other end of the universe was the last line, cos if hadn't have been I would have left at that. I bellowed in rage at that line.
I don't want those film-makers let near the rest of the series ever.

I liked the movie a lot. Granted, I'm perhaps more biased than most because it was my very first exposure to Douglas Adams' work. And I'll agree that the movie isn't quite as sharp as the books, if only because the thing that makes Adams such a great writer is his prose & his descriptions. Any writer who has those as his primary strengths is going to lose a lot in translation. But the movie was far more brilliant & faithful than we had any right to expect it to be.
Sam Rockwell & Mos Def were perfect for their roles. They played them broad but straight. Trillian was far more filled out here than she was in any of the books (except perhaps Mostly Harmless). Martin Freeman was sympathetic, flustered, and really drew you into the story despite the fact that he barely understood any of it. And any movie with Bill Nighy gets an automatic thumbs up from me.
The only thing lacking was Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin. He was OK but he sounded more irritated, not really depressed.
